Having a Mission can literally save your life. The Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine (a highly-regarded, peer-reviewed scientific publication founded in 1939 that covers the fields of Applied Psychology, Developmental and Educational Psychology, Psychiatry, and Mental Health) found that the greater someone’s sense of purpose (of having a Mission to live for), the lower the chance they had of dying from illness. If the simple fact of having a Mission, having something to recover for, can improve your capacity to battle physical illness, imagine what a sense of purpose can do for your business. A good Strategy links every single, day-to-day Task back to why the heck you're doing it in the first place. If you can explain to your team not just what they need to do, but WHY, they'll be so much more engaged with the hard work of growing your business. "There's always 15,000 things you could be doing in an organisation, but you shouldn't be doing all 15,000 of those." This one is really at the heart of what can make or break a business. It's prioritisation, baby. And it's TOUGH. Almost every conversation I have with a small business is about how to prioritise more effectively. It's not just shiny objects that get in the way of your company achieving its goals, it's also all the less shiny day-to-day stuff that feels productive but is stealing time away from you. It's really, really hard to prioritise your own list of work because you're too close to it.
