  • "Amazing Feedback: Ella's Experience with Performance Interpreting at Concerts Why Accessibility for the Deaf Community Matters" National Deaf Children's Society ·  “This experience has changed the way I feel about concerts because it showed me how fun they can be for deaf people – it made me feel included.” For Ella, who is deaf and wears a cochlear implant, attending Taylor Swift’s concert in London this August was an unforgettable experience. This was all thanks to Performance Interpreting and their British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter at the concert, who helped make sure Ella could enjoy every song and moment. Ella (pictured left with her friend Eloise) said: “When the concert started, I was filled with happiness and I just couldn’t believe it was real. The BSL interpreter helped me enjoy the experience fully as I knew I wasn’t missing out on what Taylor was saying, and I really loved seeing them sign and perform along to all my favourite songs. “It was also great being with other deaf young people at the concert. During the show, a young girl and I kept on making eye contact as I noticed she had a cochlear implant too. She then came up to me and gave me four friendship bracelets. This was my favourite moment! Her mum Katie said: “I heard about the tickets available for deaf fans through a colleague at work. Ella uses speech and BSL and I knew in such a loud hectic atmosphere, it would mean a lot to her to be able to see the interpreters too. It was very reassuring knowing that Ella would be able to fully access the concert and felt like one less thing to worry about. “It’s absolutely crucial for deaf children and young people to be able to access these types of concert and events – it’s a huge part of growing up and reinforces that being deaf doesn’t have to mean missing out on fun experiences. “Seeing Taylor Swift was a dream come true for Ella, but to be able to get accessible tickets and feel so much a part of the concert as a deaf young person really made it extra special. It’s a day that Ella will never forget and we’re so happy we were able to enjoy the show alongside other deaf Swifties!” #BSL #BritishSignLanguage #InclusionMatters #DeafAwareness #DeafAccessibility #DeafCulture #TaylorSwift #TaylorNation #TheErasTour #ErasTour #BSLInterpreters #DeafAccess #BS #performanceintrepreting

  • Making events accessible for deaf people isn’t just about performing interpretations. Improving accessibility requires venues and promoters to make decisions sooner, work together and provide clear information. This helps deaf audiences know if an event has BSL access without waiting or guessing. At Performance Interpreting, we are working hard to support the industry in making events open and welcoming for everyone. We want deaf audiences to feel included, respected, and informed. Together, we are improving access and experience. Watch our founder, Marie Pascall, on @bbcmorninglive with @yvonneycobb . • 🌍 Breaking Barriers: The Importance of Performance Interpreting in Festivals, Sports, and Entertainment 🌟 Inclusion isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a commitment to ensuring that everyone has equal access to the joy, passion, and connection that live events bring. For the Deaf community, this means going beyond the basics of accessibility and creating immersive, engaging experiences through performance interpreting. What is Performance Interpreting? Performance interpreting is the art of bringing music, sports commentary, and entertainment to life using sign language. It’s not just translating words; it’s capturing the emotion, energy, and spirit of an event, so Deaf individuals can experience the same thrills and excitement as hearing audiences. Why Inclusion Matters in Live Events Festivals, sports, and entertainment are at the heart of our culture. They bring people together, evoke emotions, and create lifelong memories. But for many Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, these experiences are incomplete without access. Performance interpreting bridges this gap, ensuring that: 🎶 Music is Felt: From lyrics to rhythms, interpreters transform music into a dynamic visual language that resonates deeply. ⚽ Sports are Shared: Live commentary, chants, and the roar of the crowd come alive in a way that unites Deaf and hearing fans. 🎭 Entertainment is Understood: Theatre, comedy, and speeches are accessible and meaningful for everyone in the audience. The Impact of True Accessibility By incorporating performance interpreting into events, we create a world where everyone—Deaf and hearing alike—feels seen, heard, and valued. It fosters inclusion, breaks down barriers, and enriches the experience for all attendees. A Call to Action for Event Organisers If we truly believe in diversity and inclusion, we must prioritise accessibility in every space. Whether it’s a music festival, a sports arena, or a theatre stage, performance interpreting is a step toward creating events that celebrate all people. Let’s work together to make festivals, sports, and entertainment accessible to the Deaf community. Because inclusion is not optional—it’s essential. #Inclusion #PerformanceInterpreting #Accessibility #DeafCommunity #Festivals #Sports #Entertainment #BreakingBarriers
