Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay.
This year’s theme is ‘Mental Health at Work’.
Every year millions of people experience mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. These issues can affect anyone regardless of age, background, or circumstances. By promoting awareness, we can create a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to discuss their struggles.
- It is estimated that 15% of UK workers suffer from existing mental health conditions.
- 875,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2022-23.
- The 5th most common reason for days off sick is mental health.
Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it often remains misunderstood and stigmatised. By raising awareness about mental health, we can help break down the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking support.
Understanding the signs of mental health issues is crucial. Recognising these signs in both ourselves and others can be the first step towards seeking help.
Symptoms may include:
- Appearing withdrawn or detached.
- Persistent fatigue with no known cause.
- Unable to meet demands.
- Ignoring own health and well-being.
- Feeling overloaded and unable to cope.
- Feeling defeated, cynical or having persistent negative thoughts.
Mental health education is key. By sharing information about mental health resources and helplines including counselling and support groups, we empower individuals to take action. Encouraging open conversations about mental well-being can help reduce the stigma and create a cultural acceptance.
