Dan worked with local plant nurseries, mushroom growers, quarrymen and crafts people for his design, in support of climate change charity Size of Wales. This story has sustainability at its core and Dan will be joined by Sally Nex, from the Peat free Partnership. 📆 Thursday 13 Feb 2024 ⏰ 19:00-20:00 Book now 👉 https://lnkd.in/dXXZHqmW #GardenDesign #Horticulture #PlantConservation #OnlineTalk #PeatFree

Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in wild plants and fungi.
About us
Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in wild plants and fungi. Founded in 1989, Plantlife has 15,000 members and supporters. Wild plants and fungi are the foundation of all life on Earth. Plantlife enhances, restores, protects and celebrates our natural heritage through working with landowners, other conservation organisations, public and private bodies and the wider public. Plantlife owns 23 nature reserves covering nearly 4,500 acres across England, Scotland and Wales. We were instrumental in the creation of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, the Important Plant Area network and we are a member of Planta Europa, a pan-European network of over 60 wild plant conservation organisations. We are governed by a board of 12 trustees and have around 70 staff, located across the UK. We also support a team of 1500 volunteers who work in the field, at events and in our offices. A registered charity, Plantlife is funded by donations from its members and supporters, through grants and charitable trusts and through its pioneering land management advice and projects.

PhD Opportunity 📢 🌱 Will Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) result in biodiversity net loss and negligible socio-economic gain? A case study of BNG in England. Biodiversity spans ecosystems to genetic diversity. Yet, for practicality, many nature market schemes measure biodiversity as habitat creation/improvement, to be traded against declining biodiversity (or other target assets). In such schemes, plant species used often come from non-local growers, using mass-produced stock of unknown provenance. Yet, research shows that plants imported from one region to another can perform very differently. Despite the rapid proliferation of UK habitat creation schemes, there is currently little or no consideration of the provenance of the seed-stock used. With the advent of BNG, local provenance issues become more pronounced, as land managers increasingly augment native areas with non-local stock. Hence, BNG risks reducing biodiversity at the genetic level, as unique locally adapted genes are lost to genetic swamping by cultivated plants. Yet, there has been almost no exploration of the necessity for defining BNG provenance zones for plant reproductive material. Similarly, the value of BNG from a public good perspective remains under-researched Led by Durham University, Plantlife is a CASE partner. We've been celebrating Scotland's Rainforests in Scottish Parliament as part of the Alliance for Scotland's Rainforest🎉 Scotland's rainforests are one of our most precious habitats. The sheer abundance, diversity and rarity of the species found in Scotland’s rainforest make this unique habitat internationally important 🌿 We were delighted to speak to MSPs and peers about why they value this amazing habitat. It was great to hear the Cabinet Secretary Mairi Gougeon reiterate the importance of Scotland's rainforest, and the need to keep working together to restore this incredible ecosystem, following the announcement of £5 million in funding in the draft 25/26 budget to continue this vital work. Thank you to speakers Graham Simpson MSP, Alistair Seaman from The Woodland Trust Scotland, and Paul Walton from RSPB Scotland 🌱 Huge accomplishments for Scotland's Rainforests have been made through the Alliance for Scotland's Rainforest. However there is still work to do, but we are committed to restoring and protecting these amazing habitats 🌲 👉 https://lnkd.in/dD78NmdR #ScotlandsRainforests #Scotland #Rainforest #TemperateRainforest #ASR #Lichens #Mosses
