Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a charity, undertaking pioneering marine research for the benefit of us all
About us
Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a world-leading research organization, and registered charity, undertaking pioneering marine research for the benefit of us all. The ocean and seas are essential to every one of us. They regulate weather and climate, produce oxygen for us to breathe, provide food, chemicals and energy, and support our economies by providing employment in many sectors including transport, tourism, fishing, energy and biotechnology. Our research is a unique combination of observation, experimentation, modelling activities and socio-economic expertise, which together provides a greater understanding of the dynamic and complex marine environment. Topics we cover range from carbon dioxide capture and storage to marine plastics. In addition, we have a commercial trading subsidiary, PML Applications Ltd, which delivers services, products and solutions related to the marine environment in key sectors such as ballast water management, biofouling, and satellite applications. Today's the day! The Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) research cruise sets sail on a 5-week voyage from Southampton to Argentina, taking an abundance of marine measurements along the way: Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e8Kn2-qZ Scientists onboard, including PML's Dr Gavin Tilstone will be sharing updates from the ship on the new AMT LinkedIn page here: Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) The UN Ocean Decade-endorsed Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) is a research programme that samples the open ocean between the UK and the South Atlantic. This research cruise, led by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and funded by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council’s National Capability, is a highly important expedition for the marine science community as it collects samples along the length of the Atlantic, producing a unique dataset and the opportunity to monitor changes in this expansive ocean.

Delighted to announce that we're a leading partner in a new programme focused on enhancing understanding of how #UK #MarineEcosystems may respond to future expansion of floating #OffshoreWindfarms (FLOW). Two new pioneering projects, named EQUIFy and FrontLine, have been chosen to address the challenges set by NERC: Natural Environment Research Council and The Crown Estate research programme ‘Ecological Effects of Floating Offshore Wind (ECOFlow)‘. This programme is focused on delivering the critical evidence needs of government and industry required to inform policy and decision making on planned large-scale expansion of FLOW. So proud of Anneliese Hodge (PhD researcher with ourselves and the University of Plymouth) who has been busy at multiple events in recent months (including this one pictured at The Box, Plymouth!) delivering the #science on the effects of #sunscreens on the marine environment. #DidYouKnow, approx. 25% of the #sunscreen we apply to our skin washes off within 20 minutes of submersion? Storm Bert has been battering our buoys this weekend with sustained gusts of over 60 knots and maximum wave heights reported by the E1 buoy of over 7m. A short time lapse from the L4 Buoy cameras shows the conditions offshore, and you can spot our APICS buoy in the waves. The Western Channel Observatory is benefited from these autonomous platforms, which make valuable measurements 24 hours a day and even through the harshest of storms.
