🏡 To meet targets of building 1.5m homes, the new government have proposed construction on designated "Grey Belt land". 🌲 This refers to areas of Green Belt land that make a limited contribution to Green Belt purposes. 🔍 These proposals, however, could potentially make an adversarial planning debate more complicated and open to challenges from pro/anti Green Belt stakeholders. 🌆 Professor Ian Mell’s research explores the need for a wholesale evaluation of the benefits and functionality of green belt land and recommends a commitment to use grey belt land for social housing provision. 👉 Read our new article here: https://lnkd.in/ev7yA72j School of Environment, Education and Development at The University of Manchester

Yesterday I had the pleasure of participating in a University of Manchester Policy@Manchester roundtable, aptly titled "Unlocking #Productivity: Boosting productivity in UK professional and business services SMEs though business practice and policy support". Chaired by Bart van Ark of The Productivity Institute the event brought together a diverse group of representatives from academia, local government and Professional and Business Services (PBS) #SMEs to discuss critical issues affecting the productivity of the PBS sector. Needless to say we barely scratched the surface in the time given, but with the recent publication of the government's "Invest 2035" green paper, and #ProfessionalAndBusinessServices named one of the 8 growth-driving sectors, the roundtable served as a valuable stakeholder consultation for the PBS sector plan within the new Industrial Strategy. Of course, it would have been rude not to pop into the Whitworth Building's Christie's Bistro for a cup of coffee in that calming, library lounge environment. Happy memories!
