New WEF report - The Cost of Inaction - speaks to the economic reasons why companies need to act on Climate earlier rather than later. "All companies will face a cost of climate inaction: how their leadership prepares for a warmer or greener world will determine whether they thrive or fall behind." Many companies will undoubtedly fall behind, but it is a choice the business leaders can make today. The report is definitely worth reading - at least the exec summary.

Are you concerned about climate change and inequality but unsure how to make a real difference? Your investments could be part of the solution. A recent report by the Environmental Funders Network found that individuals want to use their money for good, but often lack the guidance to do so effectively. "They are looking for financial advisors who can help them align their investments with their values." Here's a practical action you can take: Ask your financial advisor or wealth manager how you can invest in environmental causes that also tackle inequality. The headline in yesterday's publication by Better Society Capital (BSC) of its market sizing report on social impact investment in the UK is that the sector grew last year to £10 billion, up 7% from 2022 and a twelve-fold increase over the last twelve years. BSC's definition of "social impact investment" extends beyond the standard definition of "social investment" (which focuses on social enterprises and charities), in that it includes a broader group of investments generating social good, including high-impact startups and affordable housing. Beyond the headlines, though, the real jewel in this report is a unique treasure of user-friendly open-access data, naming the relevant investment vehicles and identifying asset owner preferences (e.g. pensions: affordable housing, endowments: social lending, family offices: impact venture, banks: affordable housing, individuals: social bank deposits), with case studies to illustrate. Having worked in the Financial Services sector for almost two decades and with a Masters in Sustainable Development, I felt I was well placed to bring this important topic to the world of banking and finance.
