There’s a lot of discussion right now about managing different generations in the workplace, especially as Gen Z steps into the workforce. Each generation is shaped by the world they grow up in, and Gen Z is no exception. As digital natives who have entered the workforce during a time of uncertainty – a global pandemic, economic shifts, and evolving workplace expectations – it’s no surprise that their outlook and approach to work differ from previous generations. Unfortunately, they’re sometimes unfairly labelled the “snowflake generation” due to lower reported levels of emotional and social well-being. Last week, I had the privilege of attending a networking brunch hosted by Gina Denysschen and Practicus, featuring insights from Dr Matthew Critchlow & Michelle Claire Smorfitt from Kirros Consulting on resilience across generations. One key takeaway? Resilience is often built through experience – navigating challenges over time. Naturally, younger generations may have lower levels of resilience simply because they haven’t had as many opportunities to develop it. This raises an important question for HR leaders and organisations: How do we foster resilience in the workplace so that every generation – and every employee – can thrive? One of the most powerful ways to do this is by helping people find purpose and meaning in their work. While I remain #OpenToWork, I’ve been fortunate to find purpose through my non-executive role and volunteering efforts, all centred around supporting young people. Whether it’s my non-exec work with The Avenues Youth Project in creating safe spaces outside of school, volunteering at Paddington Rec junior parkrun, or preparing for my next commitment at Barretstown, a camp for children and families affected by cancer and serious illness, I’m strengthening my own resilience while helping the next generation build theirs. After a much-needed break filled with the usual Christmas family madness, moving house (ye gods, why is it always so painful!), and a minor surgery for the little bear (all routine and recovering well, huge thanks to Lewisham University Hospital Paediatric Unit for being amazing) - I have big news… I’m thrilled to be starting a hugely exciting new role at TAG. As the VP of Operations for EMEA, I’ll be bringing everything I’ve learned from transforming operations within transport and travel to build on TAG’s incredible success story so far. I’ll be leading our teams across the UK, South Africa and Saudi to deliver a brilliant operation that supports and enables our ambitious plans for growth. Everyone I’ve met so far has been genuine, inspiring, and filled with ambition for the future, so I couldn’t be more excited to join the team.
