Responsible agricultural & forestry production & sourcing that delivers positive outcomes for people, nature & climate

About us

Proforest is a dynamic not-for-profit organisation with global presence that has established itself as a leader in the development and implementation of sustainable production and sourcing of agricultural and forestry commodities, including soy, sugar, palm oil, cocoa, beef and timber. We support agricultural and forestry production and sourcing that delivers positive outcomes for people, nature and climate through supporting companies, effective collaboration and developing knowledge and capacity building. Within and beyond supply chains, we work with companies, government departments, non-governmental and civil society organizations, to have positive social and environmental outcomes in the places where commodities are produced. These positive outcomes provide the compass for all our work, including protecting and restoring forests and natural ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, advancing gender equality and respecting human rights. Introducing the Converged Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) Assessment Tool! Click below to register for the launch webinar on Monday 2 December 2024 from 15:00 – 16:00 CET to explore the development journey, hear insights from organisations and companies that have co-created and piloted the tool and learn how it fits into the HREDD strategies of leading businesses. The Converged Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) Assessment Tool is now available publicly to interested companies on the website of ProforestAIM-Progress and The Consumer Goods Forum. We developed this open-source tool in collaboration with the Fair Labor Association (FLA) to standardise the assessment of HREDD maturity across industries. It allows companies like yours to: ☑️ Self-assess HREDD systems in your operations and supply chains and work to improve them ☑️ Lead informed conversations with your suppliers on HREDD and support them to identify and address (potential) risks and impacts ☑️ Streamline due diligence processes, aligned with OECD and UNGP standards Register here - https://lnkd.in/eW73H2EY

What’s the relationship between public and private sectors in developing effective natural resources policy? While government is clearly the prime instigator of legislation and policy, 25 years of experience working closely with both public and private sectors in Africa, tells us that engagement and alignment are essential for workable outcomes. In the latest Proforest Insight, Abraham Baffoe, Executive Director, Global and Africa, reflects on the situations he has encountered and the need for facilitated engagement. #ProforestInsights

Proforest has launched a new briefing note ‘Human Rights Due Diligence: A Systematic Approach to Respecting Human Rights’. Aimed at companies in the agricultural and forestry sectors, it highlights how to meaningfully implement the HRDD process through actions within and beyond the supply chain. The briefing contains case studies on capacity building and collaborative implementation of HRDD at upstream supplier level, and the collaborative development of the Converged HREDD Assessment Tool, which we are launching today at the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights.  Read it here – https://lnkd.in/ehd6Wdnj

Addressing environmental and human rights risks in soy production is crucial, especially in priority regions. Analysing the soy supply chain and direct purchases is important, but identifying where soy is embedded in various products and how it transitions from a high-profile commodity to a hidden ingredient in animal protein products (poultry, pork, beef, fish, and seafood) is even more critical. This guidance supports downstream companies sourcing products with embedded soy by following a step-wise approach to transition from unawareness to informed actions. It aims to link responsible production and sourcing by working downstream from the origin and upstream from the destination markets, ultimately converging in the middle. In line with this ‘convergence in the middle,’ Proforest had the pleasure of attending the Round Table on Responsible Soy Association (RTRS) International Conference 2024, entitled “Towards a Regenerative Transition,” held in Ghent, Belgium, from November 19-20. This two-day gathering convened key value chain actors and served as a bridge between soy producers, feed manufacturers, downstream companies, civil society, and research institutes. It sparked innovative discussions and exchanges of ideas, from pivotal emerging regulations to regenerative agriculture views from the field. Key takeaways included: ☑️ Promoting collaboration at every stage of the value chain, both horizontally and vertically. ☑️ Recognising that there is no trade-off between regulation and voluntary sustainability standards, but that both need to co-exist to ensure continuous improvements. ☑️ Ensuring farmers/producers have a seat at the table and discussing the different drivers and incentives to promote regenerative practices at the production level. ☑️ Highlighting the essential role of the feed sector in sectorial transformation. We are excited to share this guidance, which touches upon some of these key takeaways and conversations from the RTRS Conference. We congratulate the RTRS Secretariat for convening this productive meeting, and we look forward to continuing to participate in and foster collaborations in these key spaces. We have signed this letter to urge UNFCCC Parties to adopt an ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on climate finance, prioritising nature-based solutions (NbS) to mitigate climate change, protect ecosystems, and support vulnerable communities. This includes halting harmful activities and ensuring equitable, rights-based access to resources for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Today is Nature Day at #COP29 and we’re making ourselves heard. More than 80 organizations have come together to call on the UNFCCC Parties to properly recognize and finance nature’s role in addressing the climate crisis, or risk undermining global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5C. 📣 The message is simple: We need to rapidly decarbonize the world’s economy toward zero emissions and halt the destruction of natural ecosystems. Read more about the COP29 Nature Statement in our Daily Brief:

We're delighted that Proforest's Abraham Baffoe was interviewed for this issue of TFA Perspectives. We're working with companies and governments on EUDR-readiness and, given the delay confirmed last week, have been advising our clients as follows: ☑️ Maintain ongoing efforts to implement and enhance their EUDR compliance strategies, policies and procedures, and find workable implementation solutions with suppliers. ☑️ Use the next twelve months to really focus on where we have already identified potential unintended consequences of EUDR, including supporting small-scale producers in high-risk areas and in support of producer country led processes to ensure smallholder inclusion. ☑️ Continue to work on the implementation of global Deforestation and Conversion Free commitments to effectively address deforestation and conversion across their entire supply base (irrespective of specific requirements under the EUDR). This includes collective action within and beyond individual company supply chains. Proforest will continue to monitor the status of the EUDR and support companies and governments on compliance. Amidst the uncertainties above we strongly emphasise the need for coherent global DCF and forest-positive policies.

Discover how producers are making the EUDR work for palm oil, soy, and cocoa in Tropical Forest Alliance’s latest Perspectives volume. TFA Perspectives spoke to three organizations representing producers from commodities across three continents: 🌴 Rukaiyah Rafik, Yayasan Fortasbi Indonesia on palm oil in Indonesia. 🌱 Gustavo Idigoras, CIARA-CEC on soy in Argentina. 🍫 Abraham Baffoe, Proforest on cocoa in Ghana. The story they all share is that complying with EUDR – and similar regulations – requires systemic change across the entire commodity value chain. We were pleased to be a signatory to this call for action last week - putting people, nature and climate all at the centre of global action instead of dealing with each in separate silos.

Today at the High-level panel titled “Climate and Peace: Enabling Joint Action to Leave No One Behind”, the COP29 Presidency launched the Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery (BCCAP), a milestone initiative aimed at addressing the urgent nexus of climate change, conflict, and humanitarian needs. This initiative responds to the growing recognition that the adverse effects of #climatechange can act as catalysts for conflict and instability, especially in the most climate-vulnerable regions. #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan
