THE GREAT GARDEN MAKEOVER I met a teacher from Archers Brook School at an event who told me that they often get overlooked for Employer Engagement. I saw this as a challenge and he was over the moon when I suggested this project. I tasked the year 11 group to create a design for a garden makeover at a centre for homeless families and brought employers from Colas Ltd, Cheshire West and Chester Council and Waterman Group in to discuss their careers, view the pupils' designs and decide on a winner. The winning team of 4 boys worked really hard creating a lovely new space for the families at For Futures to enjoy. In their construction lessons, they made lots of bird boxes and planters out of old yellow PPE trousers filled with ducting to make them stand up with a wooden base that was buried to secure them. These have brought lots of colour to a dark area of the garden. They planted lots of flowers and made a little fairy glen for the children with small seats and toadstools provide by Lily Woodward from Mancoed which the art group painted. A massive thank you to Ian Dutton from PRONIN LIMITED who laid a pathway by the washing line so the families don’t have to stand in mud and also built some raised planters . The day before the boys started work, he got rid of lots of overgrowth and moss with his micro digger. The boys got a great insight into a day’s work and really enjoyed it. The whole project gives them lots to talk about at interviews with potential employers. Thank you to Tom Pittock from OnSite Support Ltd for providing boots and PPE for the boys and a big thank you to Chris Jefferson at Heidelberg Materials for donating the Indian Sandstone Flags and Stephen Williams at Henry Williams & Son (Roads) Limited and Rob Sanders Keyline Civils Specialist for donating various items.
