In this week’s class she covered Internal Communications 💬 The class explored effective ways to connect with internal teams—newsletters, emails, and those all-important “watercooler” moments. They discussed the power of positive communication, especially when navigating tough situations that require careful messaging to staff. The class also touched on the importance of public speaking—a skill that can be challenging for many. As a fun moment, Grainne shared a video of her 5-year-old son’s reaction to seeing himself speak in public. Turns out, even kids aren’t always thrilled about it! Gráinne McGarvey has been delivering the Critical Perspectives in PR course at Ulster University for final-year students and this week we covered Media Relations. She had the opportunity to welcome Clodagh Rice, Business Correspondent for BBC Northern Ireland. Clodagh gave an insider look into the journey of a press release, from its arrival with her to its path through TV, radio, and digital. Her tips on matching PR content to the right media platform, creating visuals for TV, and prepping clients for interviews were invaluable! 🎥✨ The students were asking insightful questions and exploring the unique (and sometimes tricky!) dynamic between PR and journalism. We covered why PR needs the media – and why the media needs us – and the importance of building strong media relationships. Gráinne McGarvey is currently delivering a module - "Critical Perspectives in PR" to final year Communication & PR students at Ulster University. This week, the class explored the PR strategic process, why companies need a well-defined strategy, the pitfalls of not having one, how tactics fall flat without proper planning, and the importance of setting realistic objectives for success. They reflected on current news, including BBC scandals and the latest media storm in Northern Irish politics. 📺💥 They even touched on Ofcom's report revealing that 16-24 year-olds are watching less than an hour of live TV a day - not that surprising? They took a step back in history examining the first media storms from The Greatest Showman and the "Torches of Freedom" campaign, to more modern PR stories like the M&S Colin the Caterpillar/Aldi controversy and the PR chaos around the recent Oasis reunion!🎪🍰🎤 It's exciting to share client experiences with the next generation of PR professionals! 💬✨ #PublicRelations #PRStudents #UlsterUniversity #MediaRelations #FutureofPR #PulsePR

Just back from an exciting trip to London, working alongside Siobhan Kearney at the Karren Brady's Women in Business & Tech Expo 💼✨ It was inspiring to see Siobhan in action as she shared her valuable insights on menopause in the workplace ahead of the Menopause NI Conference on 18 October. Her knowledge is helping women navigate this important topic in professional spaces. 🙌 Keynote speaker Linda Plant was an absolute force—an amazing example of a female entrepreneur thriving! We had an interesting morning at the PANI (Publicity Association of Northern Ireland) Business Breakfast, diving into the latest Media Nations report (2023) from the Ofcom Market Intelligence team. Some really interesting insights on how Northern Ireland consumes news and media! A few key takeaways: 📺 NI consumers watch more live TV than any other UK nation, but 16-24 year olds watch less than an hour of live TV a day. 🚓 Top TV shows: Blue Lights (47% of the viewing audience), I'm a Celebrity, Britain's Got Talent, 6 Nations Rugby, and Strictly Come Dancing. 📻 Radio is huge here, with a strong following for community radio, and 1 in 5 people listen to podcasts weekly. 👩💻 NI folks are news junkies—more so than the rest of the UK! Most of us get our news from BBC1, UTV, Facebook, BBC Radio Ulster, Cool FMl followed by the other social media platforms. 📰 Other local media outlets also got a mention including the Belfast Telegraph, Belfast Live and the Irish News.
