We’re rounding off 2024 with some shout-outs to organisations who (in our humble opinion) are doing some brilliant work in the social space. We’ve picked a big mix of organisations – large and small, clients and non-clients, UK and International. And we’ve definitely missed a few… so come on, tag them below! In no particular order... - CGI UK – for drawing on their technology expertise to develop social value innovations including a social value calculator.   - NHS Arden & GEM CSU – for their work to support the positive transformation of the UK’s #healthcare systems. - Tony's Chocolonely – for their work to change the chocolate industry, with open supply chains and an end to the exploitation of cocoa-growers.   - ActiveMe 360 – for investing 65% of their profits back into communities and successfully using sports to change lives. - Triodos Bank – for leading the charge on sustainable banking. - Netcompany - for its work to support women, veterans and minority groups into digital and tech skills. - Octopus Energy – for its Octo Assist Fund - £30 million dedicated to supporting over 85,000 vulnerable customers in need.   - Kier Transportation - for an outstanding approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and its work to engage supply chains. - HACT – for spreading social innovation within the housing sector. - QTS Group – for an impressive training academy, supporting people into skills and employment. - Groundwork – for mobilising over 203,000 hours of volunteering and improving 13.4 million square miles of land. - AWW - for its inclusive approach to place-making and building design. - Dream Big Sports Ltd. for its work to support over 13,000 children to get active and feel healthier.   - Global Good Awards – a great source of best practice sharing, inspiration and recognition for those who are working in the social value space. - Impact Reporting - for the launch of #MeasureUp - a FREE wellbeing evaluation tool that's making social value measurement more accessible and transparent for all. - Airwalk Reply – for its approach to community engagement, volunteering and participation. - Patagonia - for its bold approach to company ownership, environmental responsibility and the protection of worker's rights. Merry Christmas everyone! Social Value Business is taking a short break from 20 December to 6 January. We wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous festive season.

  • Following the recent flooding incident at Ulverston on the Lancaster to Barrow-in-Furness line, we have been rediverting the watercourse back to its original flow, using a natural design. This innovation, which is 130m long and 1.2m deep, utilises rock rolls to reinstate the previously failed beck. The protections in place manage the risk moving forward and our team is working hard to ensure this is implemented ahead of the festive period to demobilise the temporary flume.

  • We recently caught up with trainee Fayza Khan who started with QTS through the Kickstart programme in 2022 during a break from university. Following a successful run on the programme, Fayza was offered a permanent role at QTS as a trainee structures examiner. On her experience, Fayza said: “When I started at QTS, it was the first real chance I had to prove myself in a job that I saw a future in. I asked lots of questions and I did worry that I was being annoying, but the team were really reassuring and said to keep asking as that was how I would learn. “I’d really enjoyed the work I’d been doing with QTS, so when I was offered this job, I knew it was such a good opportunity that I didn’t want to waste it." The railway is often thought of as being a male dominated industry, but Fayza has taken it in her stride. “I didn’t really have any knowledge about careers in the railway before joining QTS and when I first started working on site, I thought ‘wow there is a lot of testosterone here’ but all of the guys were really great to work with. I didn’t have much confidence in myself at the beginning, but I am a different kid to what I was then. “I don’t feel like being female has held me back. A lot of the site team are what I would say are 'men’s men' that, on paper, I don’t have much in common with, but it hasn’t hindered how we work together. We all still get along and have that mutual respect. They respect that I work hard, and I think that that has definitely helped my confidence grow.” #trainee #civils #careers #rail
