The world is in crisis. Be part of the solutions. Study Geography at Queen’s.
About us
Geography at Queen’s, founded in 1928, has shaped key research agendas across the discipline spanning the physical and human worlds. In human geography we have led debates on the role of space and place in the global geographies of knowledge, politics and power, and made major contributions to understanding the cultural legacies of war, the intellectual history of climate reductionism, and the changing geographies of ethnic diversity, inequalities, and migration. In physical geography our work is contributing to research on climate and environmental change across multiple timescales, climate adaptation and mitigation (carbon capture and storage, and nature-based solutions) peatland dynamics, and soil erosion. Our innovative work in geoforensics is having wide application in crime scene investigations. In Geographical Information Science (GISci), novel interdisciplinary research using big data approaches is helping us to address issues relating to health and the environment and to develop new tools for tracking migration. Interdisciplinarity, and a commitment to the co-production of knowledge with non-academic partners, are hallmarks of our work, giving geographical research at Queen's a central role in contemporary debates about social, cultural and environmental futures.

It was great to see over 150 1st year students from across the School of Natural and Built Environment taking part in hashtag#carbonliteracy training yesterday. This is the third year that the School has offered this training to the whole incoming cohort of students as part of our commitment to living within our planetary boundaries, and is an essential start to our students' exciting journey at Queen's University Belfast.

8 undergraduate students from across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Queen’s were awarded places on the 2024 Hesselbein Global Academy for Leadership and Civic Engagement at the University of Pittsburgh. They joined other HGA Fellows from 11 different countries for a week of workshops, mentoring, networking and community outreach (from packing food parcels for people in need across the globe to learning at first hand about tackling social injustice through the work of local organisations such as the Pittsburgh Foundation). On returning to Belfast, our students described the experience as ‘one of the best’, ‘life changing’, ‘transformative’ and ‘a remarkable experience’. Left to right are: Shazeya Ahamed (Psychology), Nyan Linn Htet (MAE), Aoife Campbell (NBE), Eoin Fegan (NBE), Lauren Fegan (EEECS), James Curry (EEECS), Aarushi Ganguli (NBE) and Ellen-Jane Boyd (MAE). The School of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) at Queen’s was delighted to partner with Habitat for Humanity Ireland to offer an opportunity for two of our students to participate in the Europe Housing Forum 2024 (Warsaw, Poland) as youth delegates. Ella Burns (MPlan, European Planning) and Ross Blackbourne (MSc City Planning & Design) gained an invaluable opportunity to engage with a dynamic international group of experts and community activists who, together, are working towards empowering people in some of the world's poorest communities. The conference theme, “Decent and affordable housing without borders”, created a space to expand horizons on what's possible and translate Ella and Ross’s learning into practical ways of shaping a better world. 2025 will mark twenty years since the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) and the Higher Education Authority established the Gold Medals to acclaim Ireland’s foremost thinkers in the humanities, social sciences, and across the fields of science. Since 2005, 34 medals have been awarded. In recognition of this important milestone, past RIA Gold Medals recipients have contributed to our Members' Research Series. Our latest blog is by David N. Livingstone MRIA, professor emeritus of geography at the Queen's University Belfast | School of Natural and Built Environment. He was awarded the RIA Gold Medal in the Social Sciences in 2008. His recent book focuses on the history of ideas about climate: 'The empire of climate: a history of an idea', published by Princeton University Press (2024).
