About us
Welcome to The School of Natural And Built Environment! Where we are bringing together our well-established disciplines of Architecture, Civil & Structural Engineering, Geography, Planning, Archaeology & Palaeoecology – to study and research the challenges and opportunities in the natural and built environment. You will find in these pages an intense, enthusiastic and positive school, one that is built on rigorous inter-disciplinary teams, acute analysis, in-depth reasoning and creative thinking. The School was brought together in 2016 from the pre-existing Schools of Geography, Archaeology and Paleoecology (GAP) and the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPACE), with the aim to exploit cross-disciplinary synergies in environment, sustainability, infrastructure, culture, design and heritage. Inter-disciplinary work has developed through 3 cross-disciplinary research clusters, each headed by a Director of Research, as well as investing in existing disciplinary strengths through 5 Heads of Discipline. Numbers of PGR and PGT have also grown over this time: at present there are around 125 PhD students in the School. The School offers undergraduate, joint-honours, taught masters and postgraduate research programmes. All of our disciplines offer professionally accredited programmes: the most recent of these was Archaeology & Palaeoecology, which has now achieved accredited pathway status through the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) and University Archaeology UK (UAUK). NBE operates as a leading research-led School setting the standard in the field through high-quality teaching and exceptional industry links. Programmes provide a rich learning experience valued by employers, professional organisations and academic institutions.

When Jess began her PhD research into people who faced mobility challenges in medieval Ireland, she never imagined that she’d one day be in their shoes. “Researching injuries I was living with myself gave me a deeper understanding of what the people I studied might have faced. In hindsight, it really helped my research, but 10/10 do not recommend this type of experimental archaeology!” Graduating today with a PhD in Osteoarchaeology, Dr Jessica White turned a life-altering accident into an extraordinary academic achievement. Jess’ research explores the biomechanics of physically impaired individuals in medieval Ireland, offering a rare and empathetic perspective on the lives of those who faced mobility challenges centuries ago. But her path was far from straightforward as in May 2022, Jess suffered a serious motorbike accident which shattered her lower leg. Undergoing surgery and facing the possibility of amputation, Jess found herself deeply empathising with what the people she was studying might have faced. Despite everything, with the right support, she pushed through the physical challenges, and today she is working full-time as an osteoarchaeologist. “In one sense, the PhD gave me a reason to get up. People encouraged me to rest and leave it for a while, but having the research to focus on was grounding. “The hardest part wasn’t just the surgeries or being unable to walk – it was finding the strength to keep going when everything felt impossible. “The staff at Queen’s were incredible. From my supervisor, Professor Murphy, to the Queen's University Belfast Library team, everyone was so understanding of my circumstances. I couldn’t have done it without their kindness and flexibility. “I hope my journey can show others that even in the darkest times, there’s a way forward.” Congratulations, Dr White. You've showed us all that with determination and the right support, we can achieve whatever we want to. “The Higher-Level Apprenticeship was an incredible opportunity, especially as someone who hadn’t been to university before.” Caolan O’Neill graduated today with an MSc in Planning and Development after taking a slightly different pathway to his Master’s degree. His initial interest in planning came about as his partner Orla completed her own Planning degree at Queen’s. That interest then piqued through his vision to transform part of the historic Cromore Estate near Portstewart into a unique bubble-dome accommodation enterprise. With no traditional undergraduate qualifications, Caolan decided to pursue his Master’s through the Higher-Level Apprenticeship (HLA) pathway, with his practical experience and innovation helping him to gain a place. “Don’t be intimidated. The resources and support are there, and programmes like the HLA offer an accessible route to education.” “Balancing full-time work, managing a planning application, and studying was tough, but the support from Queen’s made it possible." Throughout the course, Caolan demonstrated a remarkable ability to link academic theory with real-world application, gained, in large part, through his hands-on experience of navigating the Northern Ireland planning system. His thesis recounted the complexities of designing a project within the historic curtilage of the Cromore Estate, persevering through consultations with statutory bodies, navigating concerns from local residents, and overcoming political hurdles. Caolan encourages others considering higher education, and particularly mature students or those without prior university experience, to take the leap: “Studying at Queen’s has been transformative for me. It has equipped me to better manage planning applications and support others facing similar challenges. It’s not just about getting approval; it’s about learning to navigate a system that often feels overwhelming.” He is now focused on making his mark on Northern Ireland’s planning landscape by advancing his redevelopment plans for the Cromore Estate. His long-term vision is to create a destination that harmonises innovation with heritage and contributes to the local economy. Congratulations Caolan! We can’t wait to see more of the transformations you are planning. “It was unbelievable to take my undergraduate work to a world stage and walk away with a global award. It’s hard to put into words.” Architecture student Oileán Galligan and a team of students recently won a top prize at the 2024 World Architecture Festival with his project designing a new future for Rathlin Island. He told us a bit about his journey bringing his idea from Queen’s to the World Architecture Festival in Singapore. “One of my lecturers sent an email about the Student Competition at the Festival, which asked entrants to identify a building or landscape that would benefit from a ‘radical intervention’ to improve its condition. "My second year work on Rathlin Island, which aimed to revitalise the island through food systems, was perfectly suited to the brief. "After my entry was shortlisted, a team was put together including myself, Hannah Jackson, Phil Kennedy, Oliver Petch, and Jake Newman. As a team, we sought to incorporate seaweed as creatively and extensively as possible, in order to create a new and sustainable future for Rathlin Island. Dr Nuala Flood, Dr Seán Cullen, Dr Gul Kacmaz Erk and everyone at Queen’s worked extremely hard to secure funding. The university very generously agreed to support the trip. We were so grateful for that.” The judges at the Festival described the project as “well considered and completed… contextual with a strong identity and materiality, and well resolved”, awarding the team with the Student Charrette Award. “My advice for students is to apply for things. Know how to talk about and market your work. I relied on a team of students who I think are incredible at what they do to help me bring everything together and they were amazing. I’m so proud of what we were able to do.” Congratulations to Oileán, Hannah, Phil, Oliver and Jake! It’s amazing to see your work awarded on a global stage like this.
