Velindre University NHS Trust, a leading healthcare provider in Wales specialising in cancer and Blood Services, is pioneering a new approach to innovation management by implementing the ISO 56001 framework. This marks a significant step forward in aligning innovation with the Trust’s strategic objectives and its status as a university-designated institution, which rests on three core pillars: Innovation, Research and Development, and Training and Education. Jennet Holmes, Head of Innovation at the Trust, realised its potential and saw an opportunity to embed an Innovation Management System (IMS) within the Trust to foster a culture where innovation is not a one-off initiative but a fundamental way of working across the organisation. https://lnkd.in/e9UHy-7E #innovation #innovationmanagement #innovationmanagementsystem ISO - International Organization for Standardization

FDA approvals reached an all-time high in 2023, with more approvals for AI and machine-learning-enabled medtech products than ever before. Digital innovations such as neuromodulation and robotics also showed a steady increase. However, the FDA’s 1997 design control guidance is built on a traditional waterfall framework, which progresses linearly through specified stages, and has been unaltered in 25 years. And its age is beginning to show, argues Dr Stuart Grant of Archetype MedTech. https://lnkd.in/etFnuBSd #rnd #innovation #medtech
Is the FDA’s waterfall framework for design control outdated for medtech development?

In November’s newsletter: Everyone says they want to save the planet, but sustainable products suffer from an 'attitude-behaviour gap' when consumers fail to switch. We investigate how Tesla bridged this gap and used reputational politics to drive an uptake of EV. The other big gap for entrepreneurs is the valley of death between proof of concept and the commercial deployment. A study from Cambridge Judge Business School suggests ways this can be overcome to avoid 'Selling the Family Silver' and RADMA trustee Val Lynch provides an industry perspective. We also feature an argument from Dr Stuart Grant of Archetype Medtech that the FDA's traditional waterfall framework is increasingly misaligned with the dynamic landscape of medical device development, and highlight the BSI Innovation Day 2024 (tomorrow!). https://lnkd.in/eg_Y2RZn

Tesla adopted ‘valuation entrepreneurship’ to successfully launch a high-end battery electric vehicle to the market - when others had failed to gain traction. The way it achieved this has been investigated by Maximilian Palmié and his co-workers. They reveal that reputational politics and blame avoidance tactics were key factors. Looking to the future, as Tesla CEO becomes increasingly political - will this strategy prove double-edged? What do you think? https://lnkd.in/ee7UvJwr #sustainable #Innovation #Tesla #Autonomous #vehicles

Increasing capacity within your innovation processes to cope with an ever changing a business environment is challenging. Alexander Kock reviewed how one multinational with 162 R&D units adopted an agile approach that can be defined both as an capability and an outcome. He says: “The results of this study might encourage managers to reorganise their R&D unit as they could use the proven benefits, such as increased agility, front-end success and NPD success, to justify reorganisations." “According to the unit manager, becoming an 'Agile R&D Unit Organisation led to astonishing results and encouraged other R&D units to follow this example, resulting in reorganisation of the whole business unit.” Read a short review of the paper which appeared in R&D Management https://lnkd.in/erX3_wyr #Innovation #agile #NPD

"It enables us to get senior management buy-in", "It ensures innovation is aligned with business intent" - these are some of the comments from delegates and presenters at the launch of the new ISO 56001 Innovation Management System. Jennet Holmes, Head of Innovation at Velindre N H S Trust, Steve Armitage, Head of Innovation at Heathrow, and Jon Rains, Director of Innovation Management at Mott MacDonald, were among those sharing positive experiences of using the process outlined within the standard. They stressed that it gave them credibility and space to innovate. In this month’s newsletter we share some of the discussion and experiences in this newsletter and highlight the BSI Innovation Day on the 14th November 2024 at the Design Museum London. https://lnkd.in/efUJzeSQ ISO - International Organization for Standardization #rnd #innovation #innovationmanagement
