Helping every child in Gloucestershire learn to read well by providing one-to-one reading support.
About us
Read With Me was set up at the start of 2020 with the prime objective of ensuring that every primary school child can read well before they move to secondary school. After 4 years, we now have a team of 250 dedicated volunteers that hear children read in over 45 schools across Gloucestershire. Read With Me volunteers hear each child read on a one-to-one basis, twice a week, which allows them to develop vital communication and social skills and above all, confidence. The results are transforming. We have recently launched a pioneering project that provides reading sessions for Year 7's at Gloucester Academy, who are in need of extra support, so that they can fully access the curriculum. We also run Not So Secret Book Clubs during school holidays - these are free half-day events that provide fun activities, crafts, storytime and free books to children in the local community.

The children's literacy crisis could be costing the UK economy up to £830 million per year group starting school, through the loss of lifetime earnings and increased government spend! 🔔 The report below highlights the "dire need for intervention." At Read With Me, we're helping to break this cycle by giving young people the support they need to become confident readers, but we need YOUR help. Can you help rewrite a child's future? 📚 We need an additional 200 volunteers to help every child in Gloucestershire learn to read well. Businesses and their employees can play a vital role by using their volunteer hours and/or fundraising. To find out more about corporate partnerships, please get in touch!💬 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ensYpxXM

Enormous thanks to the Charity Committee at Spirax Sarco UK and Ireland for their incredibly generous donation, which will allow us to continue offering our service to the children of Gloucestershire!📚
Charity Announcement! 👏🏽 📣 On Thursday last week our team were delighted to present ‘Read With Me’ charity with a cheque for £25K from our Spirax Sarco UK and Ireland education fund. The cheque was presented to their Director, Linda Cohen by Paul Pugh from our Charity Committee - along with some of the children who are benefiting from the great work at Gardner’s Lane School in Cheltenham. ‘READ WITH ME’ support reading education across Gloucestershire’s schools for 5- to 11-year-olds - preparing them for future success at high school and in their careers. We look forward to continuing our support of this great charity. Great work team! ❤ #readwithme #communityengagement #spiraxsarco #educationfund #charitysupport

An incredibly important piece on the power of reading. We see first hand, through our work, the benefit of reading for pleasure and how it helps to broaden children’s horizons!📚
The power of reading 📖 With the likes of streaming services, gaming, social media – even work emails, the battle for people’s attention had been won by mobile devices. But does this matter? If people want to get their story fix from new media, rather than the printed page, is that really a problem we should be looking to solve? The way that we absorb stories, it turns out, is as important in its way as the stories themselves. A growing set of evidence links reading for pleasure – particularly of books that are rich in metaphor – with a range of health and wellbeing benefits. Here at Arts Council England, we invest in every part of the literature sector. From festivals and publishers, to poets, comic books, story centres, and archives – we’re interested in all of it, and passionate about supporting those who work hard to make it so rich and varied.
