The UK’s journey toward a circular economy has faced its challenges, with green policies historically focusing more on decarbonisation than resource efficiency. But there is progress on the horizon! Here’s a quick overview: 📜 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 & 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴): This landmark strategy was the first major update in over a decade, laying out a long-term plan for waste prevention, reuse, and recycling in the UK. It’s a crucial step toward reforming financial incentives for material use and embedding circular principles into the national agenda. 🌐 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲 (𝗖𝗘𝗣): The UK transposed the EU’s Circular Economy Package into domestic law in 2020, setting ambitious targets like recycling 65% of municipal waste and sending no more than 10% to landfill by 2035. 🚫 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲-𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗻: The government has taken action against single-use plastics, banning items like straws, stirrers, and most recently, wet wipes containing plastic. This move is part of the broader effort to reduce plastic pollution and promote sustainable alternatives. ♻️ 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 (𝗗𝗥𝗦): One of the most anticipated initiatives, the UK-wide DRS, is finally set to launch in 2027. This scheme will incentivise recycling by allowing customers to reclaim deposits on drinks packaging. It’s seen as a vital step in boosting recycling rates for materials like PET plastic bottles, steel, and aluminium cans. 🌟 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁? As the UK continues to build its circular economy framework, businesses and consumers alike will play a key role in turning these legislative goals into reality. The groundwork is being laid—now it’s time to accelerate the shift toward a more sustainable future and Reconomy is helping ambitious businesses of all shapes and sizes to better manage their resources, helping reduce waste, optimise their supply chains, and contribute in a meaningful way toward the circular economy. Our 10-point regulatory framework is set to support reform across the waste sector to unlock growth and meet net-zero targets. https://okt.to/3ln9ox #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #UKPolicy #ResourceManagement #WasteManagement #EnergyTransition #Recycling

As global regulations tighten and sustainability becomes non-negotiable, manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers are all rethinking their business models. The goal? To design out waste, cut down on harmful impacts, and embrace circular practices that can both preserve our planet and generate $3.7 trillion annually (according to McKinsey.) The urgency is clear: Textiles are one of the most environmentally damaging industries. In the EU alone, textile consumption ranks as the third highest pressure on land and water use and the fifth highest in raw material consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Shockingly, less than 1% of textiles worldwide are recycled into new products. But change is on the horizon. With new regulations like the Textiles EPR legislation in the EU and similar schemes expected globally, the push for a sustainable textiles industry is stronger than ever. We’re at the forefront of this shift, helping businesses navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities. Our service, ReDress, is designed to help brands understand and manage their global obligations, minimise their environmental impact, and thrive in this new era of sustainability. The transition may be challenging, but it’s also a chance to lead in sustainable growth and innovation. The time is now for the textiles industry to step up and contribute to a circular economy. Let’s make a difference together! Imagine a world where products are designed with the end in mind — less waste, more recycling, and a cleaner planet. That’s the power of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)! This is a game-changing strategy that makes producers responsible for their products throughout their lifecycle, especially when they’re no longer in use. Instead of passing the waste problem onto consumers and governments, EPR shifts the responsibility back to the creators. This means more eco-friendly designs, better recycling systems, and a push towards a circular economy. 🚨 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝗣𝗥 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: With global waste set to skyrocket to 3.40 billion tons by 2050, we can’t afford to wait. EPR is crucial to turning the tide on waste and promoting sustainability. 🔄 How Reconomy Helps: Reconomy empowers businesses to meet EPR regulations, innovate, and embrace circular economy principles. Whether it’s through comprehensive waste management, compliance services or agile supply chain management and logistics, Reconomy is the strategic partner that many businesses turn to when developing and implementing EPR strategies to minimise waste and maximise resources. With the launch of the Reconomy Environmental Action Plan (REAP). we are officially the first UK company in our sector to adopt Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) 🎉 As a leading international circular economy specialist, we are truly committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations and our partners by tackling climate change, material scarcity, and biodiversity decline. With REAP, we’re laying out a clear pathway to net zero carbon by 2040. Aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, our plan includes well-defined milestones that guide our journey toward a more sustainable future, supporting both near-term environmental ambitions and science-based targets. Being the first UK company in our sector to adopt Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures further strengthens our sustainability reporting alongside what we already do on Climate-related financial disclosures. We’ll also be on the list of adopters announced at Biodiversity COP16 later this year in Colombia.🌿 Beyond our international efforts, while already making significant progress against our wider Climate and Nature Action Plan, as outlined in the 2023 Sustainability Report, Reconomy continues to support regional environments. Through a partnership with Shropshire Wildlife Trust, we’re creating ‘wild highways’ for dormice and giving our employees the chance to volunteer and contribute to biodiversity projects. Diane Crowe, our Group Sustainability Director, said: “The publication of REAP is a crucial milestone in delivering our ambitious Nature and Climate Strategy, and adopting TNFD reinforces our commitment to achieving net zero carbon with a transparent and achievable timeline.” Together, we’re leading the way towards a more circular economy. In the fashion circular economy, there’s no such thing as waste - The end of one product’s life marks the beginning of another. This is where upcycling, downcycling and recycling come in. Clothing that can no longer be worn can be broken down into fibres and transformed into new garments, while other items are turned into entirely new products. For example, worn-out jeans could be repurposed into stylish bags or insulation materials, giving them a new lease on life. Reconomy works with brands to help them implement effective recycling programmes that ensure more garments stay in circulation and out of landfills. Upcycling is also gaining momentum, as creative designers turn fashion waste into one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s not just about reducing waste – it’s about creating value from the discarded. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀? Businesses are now rethinking how they operate by embracing circular economy principles. Here are a few things you need to know about that’s driving this transformation: 🔵 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: Imagine products built to last, designed to be easily reused or recycled. 🔵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲/𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Companies keep ownership of products and offer them through leasing or subscriptions. This way, products are maintained, repaired, and reused, extending their lifespan and reducing waste. 🔵 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴: Turning used materials into something new and valuable. Upcycling is a perfect example, where old products are transformed into higher-value goods. 🔵 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆: Traditional recycling meets innovation, where waste is converted back into energy or new materials, keeping valuable resources in use. These models can work together to create a circular value chain, transforming everything from design to manufacturing, retail, and even product takeback and remanufacturing. Other terms you may hear about are: 🔵 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 -𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: In a circular economy, closed-loop recycling (where a product is recycled back into itself) is the gold standard, ensuring materials don’t lose value over time. 🔵 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Open-loop recycling, while not as ideal, still offers a better alternative to waste by converting products into something new. 🔵 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: Some circular businesses also tap into the sharing economy. This involves maximising the use of assets like vehicles or tools through leasing, renting, or sharing schemes. It’s all about extending the life of products and shifting from ownership to access. The circular economy is about designing products that last, rethinking ownership, and finding new ways to keep materials in use. It’s a game-changer for businesses and the planet with the ability to drive $3.7 trillion a year! 🎄🌍 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆! 🌟♻️ As the holidays approach, it’s time to celebrate, share joy, & come together with loved ones. But it’s also a chance to reflect on how our festive habits impact the planet. With a few thoughtful changes, we can make this holiday season merry, meaningful, & mindful of the environment. Our 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 are here with creative, practical ideas to help you reduce waste, recycle more, & embrace eco-friendly habits this festive season. 🎁 𝗚𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 Choose wrapping paper that’s recyclable—avoid glitter paper, which contains microplastics. Reuse materials like ribbons, pom-poms, & gift bags from last year. Get creative with fabric wrapping (like Furoshiki) or use plain brown paper, decorated with natural materials like sprigs of holly or cinnamon sticks. ✨ 𝗘𝗰𝗼-𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿 Foraged Finds: Use pinecones, evergreen branches, & berries to create compostable decorations. DIY Crafting: Make salt dough ornaments with the family—fun for kids & lasting for years. Switch to LED Christmas lights, which are energy-efficient & long-lasting, saving both power and money. 🎁 𝗟𝗼𝘄-𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 Choose meaningful gifts that last, like experiences or even plant a tree in someone’s name. Thrift unique items, like a beautiful planter for bulbs or a vintage book paired with cozy extras like tea or chocolate. Wrap gifts minimally—try newspaper, fabric scraps, or even reusable containers. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 Plan your portions: Avoid over-catering by estimating realistic quantities for your guests. Get creative with leftovers: Turn roast vegetables into soups. Make turkey sandwiches, casseroles, or curries. Use citrus peels & scraps for festive drinks or compost them. Compost your food waste to give back to your garden. 🌿 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 Even in winter, there are small ways to protect wildlife: Build a brash pile with logs, twigs, & leaves to create habitats for birds, frogs, and insects. Create a hedgehog highway by adding small gaps in garden fences. Provide fresh water for animals and avoid disturbing leaf piles where creatures may hibernate. 🐝 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝘀: Avoid moving logs or disturbing soil where bees may be hibernating. Relocate bee hotels to dry, sheltered areas like a garage or shed. 💪 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲! This year, we’re challenging you to embrace sustainable holiday habits. Can you: ✅ Thrift or create one handmade gift with reused or natural materials? ✅ Re-wear a party outfit instead of buying new? ✅ Prepare one meal using leftovers? ✅ Go two weeks without single-use coffee cups or shopping bags? Share your eco-friendly holiday ideas and photos with us in the comments section—we’d love to see your creativity in action! #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #SeasonsGreetings
