  • The UK waste sector needs urgent reform to boost recycling rates, cut emissions, and move towards a true circular economy. Our 10-point regulatory framework proposes a structured approach to make waste management more efficient, sustainable, and business-friendly. Which of these waste reform priorities do you think is most critical for driving real change? 👇 🔘 Consistent Separate Collections – Standardising waste collection across the UK to reduce contamination and increase recycling. 🔘 Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – Holding manufacturers accountable for the full lifecycle of their products, from design to disposal. 🔘 Waste Tracking & Digitalisation – Using data and technology to monitor waste flows, set reduction targets, and improve efficiency. 🔘 Financial Incentives & Disincentives – Subsidies for recycled materials and penalties for excessive waste to drive circularity. 💬 Got a different priority in mind? Drop it in the comments! 👇 #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #Sustainability #NetZero

  • The long-awaited mandatory Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) system, set to revolutionise waste management, has been pushed back to April 2026. While some see this as a setback, our colleagues at Reconomy Connect (Part of Reconomy’s family of brands) see it as an opportunity. Dave Gudgeon (MCIWM, CRWM), Head of External Affairs at Reconomy Connect, notes that this delay gives waste producers, carriers, brokers, and processors a crucial window to prepare, adapt, and engage with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to ensure the system is fit for purpose. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗪𝗧 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? ✅ Eliminates mountains of paperwork, replacing it with real-time digital tracking ✅ Enhances transparency and accountability in waste movements ✅ Strengthens the circular economy by ensuring resources are recovered and reused ✅ Reduces waste crime, which costs the UK £1 billion a year 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲? 🔵 Engage with Defra to help fine-tune the system 🔵 Invest in digital readiness - train teams, upgrade systems, and streamline data management 🔵 Prepare for automation & integration, setting up for long-term efficiency gains You can find out more in Dave’s latest article in Circular Online 👉 https://okt.to/fovxrU #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #WasteManagement #ResourceManagement #DigitalWasteTracking

  • A major win for sustainability! Uruguay takes the lead in Latin America with a landmark Deposit Return System ♻️🇺🇾 On 21 February 2025, Plan Vale finalised an agreement with CIEMSA, CSI, and Reverse Logistics Group (RLG) to launch Uruguay’s first-ever Deposit Return and Refund System (DRS) for single-use beverage containers. This pioneering move positions Uruguay as the first country in Latin America to implement such a system, setting the stage for efficient recycling and waste management across the region. How it works: ✔️ Consumers return PET plastic, aluminium cans, glass bottles, and carton beverages ✔️ The system incentivises recycling with refunds ✔️ RLG provides an End-to-End DRS IT solution to ensure smooth, transparent operations Why this matters: ✅ Boosts recycling rates and reduces waste ✅ Supports Uruguay’s national sustainability goals ✅ Establishes a model for other Latin American nations RLG, part of the Reconomy family of brands, is proud to bring its global expertise in environmental logistics to this initiative, ensuring a seamless, efficient, and scalable system. This is just the beginning - Uruguay is paving the way for a circular future in Latin America #Uruguay #Sustainability #DepositReturnSystem #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #Recycling #RLG

Our colleagues at Valpak Limited recently wrapped up an incredible two-day event in Birmingham, where the entire packaging supply chain came together to showcase the latest innovations shaping the future of the industry. Here are some of the teams' key takeaways: Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) – Wales takes a stand 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷 Andy Rees PhD, OBE (Head of Waste Strategy, Welsh Government) made it clear: Wales intends to include glass in their DRS despite challenges from the Internal Markets Act. Meanwhile, in a separate discussion, a panelist coined the term "Wexit" to describe Wales’ departure from a UK-wide DRS scheme. The divergence in approach across the UK is becoming increasingly evident. 🌱 Climate Action & Circular Economy in Northern Ireland Andrew Cassells ( Strategic Investment Board, NI) highlighted the patchwork of recycling collection methods across Northern Ireland, advocating for a shift toward England’s Simpler Recycling Strategy. With NI’s current household recycling rate at 50.5%, this signals a major investment opportunity in recycling infrastructure. 📦 PackUK – Industry at a Turning Point PackUK was formally launched, with Mary Creagh MP (DEFRA) delivering a blunt assessment of UK policy delays, calling past leadership "dithering, dragging, and delay." She stressed the urgency of tackling the “avalanche of waste” and the critical role of circular policies in reducing litter. To drive change, PackUK announced three new industry-led working groups focused on: 🔵 Recycling Assessment Methodology (RAMs) 🔵 Efficient and Effective Systems 🔵 Communication & Engagement Details on how to get involved will be released soon! Big Circular Economy Announcements Coming Before April The Minister hinted at major upcoming policy moves, including financial incentives for reuse and refill. Could this be a behavioural science approach (nudging consumers toward sustainable choices), or a policy move like Scotland’s proposed “Latte Levy”? The event reinforced one thing: The packaging industry is at a crossroads. With divergence across UK nations and a renewed policy push, the coming months will be crucial in shaping the future of sustainable packaging and circular economy strategies. What are your thoughts on these developments? We’d love to hear your thoughts! #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Packaging #SupplyChain #DepositReturnscheme #Scotland #NorthernIreland #Wales
