The RLI is the only academic centre in the UK to concentrate specifically on international refugee law.
About us
The Refugee Law Initiative is the only academic centre in the UK to concentrate specifically on international refugee law. As a national focal point for leading and promoting research in this field, the Refugee Law Initiative (RLI) works to integrate the shared interests of refugee law scholars and practitioners, stimulate collaboration between academics and non-academics, and achieve policy impact at the national and international level. The RLI has a number of academic, teaching and support Staff and regularly hosts Visiting Fellows from other institutions. The RLI also facilitates networks of Senior Research Associates and Research Affiliates that include many of the leading thinkers on refugee law and forced migration. These networks are integral to the work of the RLI and allow for collaboration across a range of disciplines. The RLI also hosts the Internal Displacement Research Programme (IDRP). This specialised programme carries out a similar range of research and policy activities specifically in relation to internal displacement.

For anyone who missed this earlier in the week: our new article in Nature unpicks the far-reaching health consequences of neglecting the crisis of internal displacement in conflicts such as Sudan, Gaza, Ukraine, Ethiopia... and what we need to do to better respond
"HEALTH OF PEOPLE WHO ARE DISPLACED IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES IS A NEGLECTED GLOBAL CRISIS" - new comment article in NATURE journal published today with my colleagues Bayard Roberts and Jina Swartz MD, PhD, MScMed(Neuro), MFPM(Dis), FMedSci: https://lnkd.in/eNFfD8aF Compared with cross-border refugees, people who are internally displaced receive little attention — despite their dire health needs. Moreover, between 2010 and 2019, international aid for health care for internally displaced people fell from an annual amount of US$5.34 to $3.72 per capita. Several initiatives have begun to address the problem. To lessen severe inequity and prevent epidemics and pandemics, the international community must build on this momentum and ensure that much more attention and resources are directed towards the needs — particularly the health needs —of internally displaced people. #RLI SEMINAR NEXT WEEK - 'Conflict, statelessness and state succession: Reflections from South Asia and Africa' 5 December 2024, 6:00PM - 7:30PM, IALS Council Chamber, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, 17 Russell Square, London WC1B 5DR https://lnkd.in/eCxZqjQV The 1947 Partition of India engendered the biggest migration in recorded history, as more than 14 million people were displaced amidst large-scale violence. While this rightly receives considerable scholarly attention, there is little understanding of the 1971 War which ‘completed’ the Partition by severing West and East Pakistan (thereafter Bangladesh). By illuminating this history, this event will not only address the gap in refugee history but also provide important context to contemporary conversations about citizenship, borders, denationalisation, and national identity which continue to dominate much of the political discourse in South Asia today. Speakers: - Dr Antara Datta (Royal Holloway, University of London) - Dr Bronwen Manby (Human Rights Consortium, School of Advanced Study, University of London) Professor Philip Murphy, Director of History & Policy, will be the Chair of the event. This seminar is part of the 15th International Refugee Law Seminar Series which is being convened by the RLI in collaboration with #RefugeeHistory. #Statelessness #Refugees #RefugeeProtection #Migration #India #Pakistan #SouthAsia #Africa School of Advanced Study, University of London University of London Researching Internal Displacement Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies, School of Advanced Study
