But some companies are now introducing subtle tests like the “Coffee Cup Test” - where candidates are judged on whether they return an empty coffee cup to the kitchen after an interview. It’s a seemingly harmless way to gauge thoughtfulness and team spirit, but here’s the real question: 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲? Not everyone will pick up on these “hidden” tests for a variety of reasons. Think of: ➡️ 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 Who may not respond to unspoken expectations in the “expected” way ➡️ 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 who may be laser-focused on the conversation itself, not the coffee cup ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 where workplace norms vary significantly 👉 Are we risking unfairly penalising capable people for not meeting unspoken, subjective standards that have nothing to do with their actual skills or contributions?
