An award-winning death-care service that turns the ashes of those who have died, into beautiful memorial reefs.

About us

Resting Reef is a death care startup that redefines how we honour loved ones through an environmentally conscious memorial service. Founded by graduates from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, Aura Murillo and Louise Skajem, the sustainable venture transforms cremated ashes into living ocean reefs that regenerate marine ecosystems. By turning loss into life, Resting Reef aims to tackle several issues at once: redefine traditions with an ocean “cemetery” that restores marine biodiversity, sequesters carbon and prevents coastal erosion—creating a lasting tribute that benefits our oceans and future generations. The team at Resting Reef has garnered significant recognition, including winning five Innovate UK grants, the Arts Foundation Fellowship Award, a D&AD Pencil for Creative Excellence and the Seoul Design Award. Resting Reef has been featured in Fast Company, Wallpaper, The Telegraph, and showcased at events like the London Design Biennale and Dutch Design Week.

Bringing pets together, in loving memory. We are so excited to introduce a way for beloved pets to be with other pets in the afterlife: Community Reefs. Our second service in pet aftercare allows pet owners to share a portion of their pet’s ashes to join with others in creating one whole living reef — 🌊🐾🪸 a shared memorial that becomes sea gardens for marine life to call home. Visit our website to learn more, and when you are ready, we are here to look after your pets in the afterlife. With love, Aura & Louise https://lnkd.in/ekGz7xCz PS. We know how difficult it is to lose a pet and there can be many questions about this process. Feel free to send us a message here and we’ll answer right away. 💌 #RestingReef #CommunityReef #SustainableMemorials

  • Highlights from our time in Tulamben! It’s a very different feeling coming back to Bali this year when last summer, it was all about laying the foundations for our first memorial reefs. This time, with the reefs in good shape, we shifted focus towards deepening our relationships with the locals who make this reef restoration possible. We also made new connections that feel like the start of something new for the future of Resting Reef in #Bali. Now back in London and reminiscing the last few weeks, we want to thank every person we met on this trip—for the warm welcome to your homes, your generosity for allowing us to be part of your culture and customs, and your kindness for sharing your wisdom with us. 1. Nyoman, our local lead in Tulamben, who has been our bridge to the land, sea, and traditions of the area. 2. Tulamben’s village leader, who welcomed us and helped us understand how our memorial reefs could align with local customs. 3. New partners, from hotels to conservationists, who share our vision for sustainable memorials that give back. Scuba Seraya resort, The Legian Seminyak, Bali SOKKOOL Coliving & Coworking, BWork Bali Coworking Space 4. The local community, who invited us into their nonprofit school, Yayasan LMU, and allowed us to share our restoration efforts with the students. The Suwandi Foundation In the coming days, we’ll be sharing more highlights and images from our trip. Stay tuned ✨

This is why I do what I do 🤩 What do I do? Well, here’s how my 11-year-old cousin described it when he wrote the caption for his artwork, which won his school’s art competition: "I am also inspired by my cousin, who works with ashes thrown into the ocean and trying to make it ecofriendly." – Anders Haha, well, that’s not exactly how I would describe my work and what we do at Resting Reef , but the fact that my work caught his attention and inspired him to create an art piece called Under The Surface—depicting vibrant marine life and addressing the environmental crisis we face today—warms my heart. It shows the real impact Resting Reef has on people and how sharing our mission can inspire others towards climate action. His caption did receive some parental feedback and now reads more like, "...I have also learned a lot from my cousin, who works to help restore coral reefs." This is probably a better description for readers unfamiliar with Resting Reef’s memorial services. 😊 His artwork, along with the caption, will now be exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art alongside other competition winners. Moments like these motivate me—small "wins" in what is often a long, fun, frustrating, and sometimes tedious journey toward positive global change. I’d love to hear about a small "win" you’ve experienced lately that put a smile on your face! 🙌 btw, to make sure there are no confusions, we thoughtfully build memorial reefs and do not "throw ashes in the ocean".

  • The past three months have been an incredible journey of business development and commercialisation for Resting Reef. Through the Imperial Better Futures Internship Scheme, we had the opportunity to host Eva Look as an intern. During her time with us, Eva had an important role in expanding our business opportunities, establishing connections, and exploring the development of our different product tiers. Here are some of the key insights we gained from Eva’s work and this period: 1. The pet funeral market in the UK is valued at £100 million, while in the U.S. the market stands at approximately £1.03 billion. This highlights the growing demand for meaningful and sustainable memorial options for beloved pets. 2. 44% of all pet spending relies on vet recommendations, making vet practices a crucial channel for offering our pet memorial services. Building strong relationships with vets can help us reach more families during their time of need. 3. We discovered a significant difference in response rates when doing outreach: 0% via email vs. 82% through in-person visits. This reinforces the importance of face-to-face engagement when connecting with vets and other potential partners. A huge thank you to Eva for her dedication and contributions and to the Imperial Better Futures Internship Scheme for making this collaboration possible. Here’s to more learning, growth, and meaningful connections in 2025! #RestingReef #BusinessDevelopment #PetMemorials #LearningAndGrowth

Three months flew by, and just like that, my internship at Resting Reef has come to an end! 🌊🐚 Working in a startup environment has been an incredible learning experience, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to work with such a passionate, purpose-driven team. From building business connections to shaping our first batch of sales, this journey has taught me invaluable lessons about growing an impact-driven venture that truly makes a difference. Here are some of them: 🔬 Science and Numbers Matter As a deathcare startup committed to both empathy and sustainability, I’ve been inspired by how much emphasis we place on measurable impact. Instead of just talking about environmental benefits, we back our mission with real science and data. With Dr Zach Boakes, our PhD in Marine Biology guiding our reef design and monitoring efforts, we ensure that our work leads to tangible ecological restoration. Numbers don’t lie, and I can’t wait to see even more promising results in future monitoring reports! 🛠 Experimentation is Key Over the past three months, I had the chance to test different ways to reach potential customers and business partners. Whether through LinkedIn connections, virtual calls, or in-person visits to vet clinics and parks to speak with pet owners, I realised there’s no one-size-fits-all strategy in business development. Markets evolve, behaviours shift, and the best approach is to stay curious, keep experimenting, and embrace the learning process. 🌱 Sustainability Still Drives Consumer Choices Despite the ESG pushback in the US, sustainability remains a key priority for consumers. During my research, I found that nearly 70% of pet owners globally express concern about climate change and actively make environmentally conscious choices. This reinforces my belief that businesses with genuine sustainability at their core will continue to earn consumer trust and loyalty in long run. A huge thank you to the Resting Reef team for an unforgettable experience and to Aura Murillo Pérez and Louise Lenborg Skajem for your guidance and support! Also, a big thank you to Imperial College London’s Better Futures Internship Scheme for curating this opportunity. 💙 📌 Source for the 70% statistic: https://lnkd.in/eZCDwJ5m

Can you guess whether these coral reefs are natural or artificial? That’s the beauty of thoughtful #biomimicry design—these are man-made reefs that blend seamlessly into their underwater environment, inviting marine life to thrive once again. Artificial reefs, when crafted with care and intention, can provide a foundation for restoring marine ecosystems damaged by decades of overfishing, pollution and coral bleaching. By mimicking the structure and texture of natural reefs, these artificial get the same job done: 🏠 offer shelter, 🐟 breeding grounds, 🪸 and food sources for marine species. These artificial reefs in Tianyar, Bali, were placed 4–5 years ago by North Bali Reef Conservation and are located right next to our pilot site. They serve as an inspiring indicator of what we hope to achieve within the same timeframe.

  • At Resting Reef, we believe that every choice we make has an impact—even how we say goodbye to loved ones. With this in mind, we hope this post explaining different end-of-life options sheds light on the choices we can have while we’re alive, and on the impact we can have in the afterlife. At Resting Reef, we celebrate remembrance and renewal underwater, not underground. What are your thoughts on leaving a legacy that heals? 🪸

"There you go buddy, you're gonna be swimming with the fishies." (words I never thought I'd be saying about Fenn's ashes!) Yesterday I walked you through the Resting Reef collection kit. Today, I'm doing it for real with my boy's ashes. Not gonna lie, it was a bit bittersweet, but I wanted to show you exactly what happens, each step of the way. And because it's important to me to normalize death, showing this process is a way to do that - taking the scary and unknown out of 'what's in an urn.' When we say we're doing death differently at Honor Pet, this is what we mean. We are doing all we can to move beyond ordinary. We want to find experiences that reflect the one-of-a-kind relationship shared. This is just the start of Fenn's ocean journey and I can't wait to share what happens next when he goes to Bali next month! With you in this, Shea Cox, DVM
