It's almost the end of the year, so we're looking back at some of our key moments of 2024! ✨ ➡️ At the start of this year, Iona Ledwidge started as our new CEO ➡️ We celebrated supporting 10,000 young people through The Spear Programme ➡️ We were excited to have been named one of the UK's Best Places to Work 2024 by The Sunday Times ➡️ We opened two new Spear Centres this year - in Hastings and Gateshead Thanks to all of you who have supported us and the young people on the Spear Programme this year. We can't wait to share with you all we have planned for 2025! 2024 has had its fair share of highlights and challenges for our Chief Executive, Iona Ledwidge. Having come to the post with an exciting big vision, Iona’s health meant her year took an unexpected turn. We think a career is a gift. Thank you for showing us that you agree 🙌 Your hugely generous donations over the last two weeks are enough to provide an individual coaching session for 120 young people, helping equip them to land that first job opportunity. And we know it’s not ‘just a job’. It’s self-worth, financial freedom, purpose... and the potential of even better things to come for the young people who complete the Spear Programme. ➡️ Young people like Morgan, who did the Spear Programme in Bournemouth: "I've now got a job in Sainsbury's, and I've pushed myself to go to the gym every day. I've just applied for farming courses, which is exciting. My life seems a lot more controllable than it used to be." More than 1 in 10 young people report not being able to cover their essential living costs. Two fifths of young people say they are worried about money issues.* A job is worth more than just its salary, but that salary matters. ➡️ It's the dignity of financial security. ➡️ It's peace of mind that you can afford to pop the heating on. ➡️ It's the pride that comes with picking up the bill for a round of drinks for colleagues. This Christmas party season, we're asking our supporters, partners and network to help us raise a huge £80,000, to fund places for 40 more young people on The Spear Programme. There, they'll receive expert coaching to upskill and empower them for their first steps on their career journey, and accessing all the benefits that a job and salary bring. Just £15 towards our target would cover the cost of three young people travelling to 'Hire Me', so they can interview for live job opportunities, and kickstart their career. We're excited to announce we were named Youth Employment Provider of the Year by Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) in their ERSA Employability Awards 2024 last night! 🎉 A big thank you to ERSA for this honour and congratulations to all the other shortlisted organisations who are doing great work to help support young people into employment. We’re passionate about employment. If that seems like a non sequitur, we get it. Whether 'employment' feels like an uninspiring necessity or a cause of frustration, it's not often a topic that incites passion. But here's the thing – for the roughly 1 in 8 young people in the UK who are not in employment, education or training (NEET), we think that should change. Because employment is so much more than 'just a job'. What's been your best experience of a job interview? 🤔 Interviews can be nerve-wracking, whether you've had many of them or you're preparing for your first one, like many of the young people on the Spear Programme this week. Today is "mock interview" day, when our trainees get to sit down with an experienced professional to practice an interview for a real job, and get instant feedback afterwards, like these young people from Spear Hammersmith & Fulham today. We're so grateful to all our volunteers who take time to come and help our Spear trainees feel equipped and ready for their interviews.
