Reverberate PR & 2022 Nuffield Scholar

📣📣 It feels a little surreal to be announcing this, but I am so very proud to share that my Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust report has now been published! As always, heartfelt thanks goes to AHDB and the Dartington Cattle Breeding Trust for believing in me and sponsoring my scholarship. This experience was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I am so grateful to each and every person who shared their time, knowledge and experiences with me along the way. British agriculture is such a special industry, full of clever and passionate people who do amazing things every single day. But we have some serious reputational challenges to contend with and must rethink how we communicate to the public and consumers if we are to make progress. This requires investment in long-term strategic thinking, social sciences research, and educating/up-skilling farmers and industry members. Livestock agriculture, in particular, is at risk of losing its social license to operate - or in layman's terms, society's permission to exist. And all of the science, technical reasoning or economic modelling in the world will not change that fact. Two years of discussions resulted in a few key learnings: 🙏 SHARED VALUES are one key that could help unlock this issue. 👂 LISTENING TO THE PUBLIC and hearing their concerns is essential, and we just might learn something in the process. 🪟 TRANSPARENCY IS POSSIBLE, even within more intensive systems. 🙋🏼♀️ LEADERSHIP & COURAGE are very much needed (but who will step up?) ✨ AUTHENTICITY is more powerful than slick marketing and talking points My primary hope is that this report might inspire others to think differently about how we engage with the outside world and tell our stories. There are infinite opportunities to be more transparent about our livestock systems, but will we embrace them instead of defaulting to "that's too hard/scary" and shy away? You can read or listen to my findings at the links below: ➤ Written report (also below): https://lnkd.in/diAVQm-S ➤ Report Video: https://lnkd.in/dmYuCEmT#NuffCon23 Presentation Recording: https://lnkd.in/dqsHYrFA So much gratitude to everyone who gave their time and/or supported me, including (but not limited to!): AHDB - Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, Reverberate PR | Certified B Corp, Animal Welfare Program @ UBC, Doyle Karr, Charlie Arnot, Roxi Beck, Derrick Josi, Deanna Lush, Mike Levengood, Leighton Kolk, Howard Parry-Husbands, Lauren Bright, George Steinmetz, Amy Jackson, Sarah Mock, Jens Hansen, Samantha Jamieson, Sarah Bolton, Meryl Ward, Annabel Shackleton, Diana Spellman, Susan Weaver Ford, Mary Hext, Will Evans, Glenys Zucco, Jeff Gaus and Thomas Martin.

I was lucky to attend the Louder than Words #BCorpFestivalUK this week – the largest ever gathering of BCorp businesses in the world – all focussed on using business as a force for good. My top 4 takeaways : 🛑 Stop talking about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ businesses and instead work towards every business being ‘better’. 🦋 There are businesses that are putting Nature on their Board of Directors. Nature has an equal vote in decision-making and a voice. Imagine that! 📣 The bigger the brand, the bigger the fear of greenwashing accusations, and the less it promotes its sustainable initiatives. We need to find new ways of making sure these businesses feel safe to talk about their actions, so they can inspire others. Talking about tangible activity is safer than broad PR statements... and wouldn’t it be great if we started talking about the failures as well as the successes? 👥 Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Start now, not when you have all the answers. We are all human and flawed, but we can all do something that makes a difference. Here’s me pictured with the wombling legend that is Uncle Bulgaria – the pioneer environmentalist [I am the one on the right].
