🏆 The UK’s best new home – Six Columns by 31/44 Architects wins RIBA House of the Year 2024. Designed by Will Burges, Director of 31/44 Architects, as a family home for himself, his wife and two children, Six Columns cleverly occupies a tight plot in the leafy suburbs of Crystal Palace, South London. As the family occupy the building, they will continue to tinker with it, inside and out, allowing it to evolve to their changing needs over time. “Six Columns is a beautifully crafted family home that cleverly incorporates Brutalist references and creative flourishes while retaining a strong sense of suburban belonging. It shows what can be achieved when working with even the tightest of suburban sites, and its flexible, unfinished aesthetic offers a solution to futureproofed design: this is a home that can evolve with its occupants’ changing needs overtime. The generosity of space belies the limitations of this small garden plot. As we look for creative and practical solutions to the housing crisis, Six Columns offers a blueprint for bespoke urban infill development.” – Muyiwa Oki PRIBA, RIBA President ➡️ Watch the project film: https://ow.ly/seGA50Uj2Ru #HouseOfTheYear

Super excited to share my first story for HYPEBEAST! For Hypebeast I wrote about the RIBA's new exhibition ‘Difficult Sites: Architecture Against the Odds.’ This show at the RIBA gallery takes visitors behind the scenes of iconic architectural projects, from a Brutalist estate to a biome in a disused quarry.   "Difficult Sites: Architecture Against the Odds’ showcases over 20 projects on tricky sites dating back to the 1900s. It’s free to attend, and promises a “deep dive” into each of the backstories. The concept for the exhibition was based on the idea that architects produce their best work when working on a site with particular difficulties.” Massive thank you to Alice Morby! Creating a safer built environment is a responsibility we all share, and at RIBA, we ARE stepping up. This week, we published our response to the final report from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 – a crucial moment for reflecting on where we stand and where we must go next. 🔍 What’s inside? • Our take on the recommendations from the inquiry. • Key areas where we believe improvements are essential. • Opportunities for even greater change within the built environment sector. The Grenfell tragedy was a devastating reminder of why safety, accountability, and high-quality design in our industry is non-negotiable. This report – and our response – is about making sure it never happens again. It’s about protecting people’s lives after all. I’d love to hear your thoughts: 💡 What else can we prioritise to create safer places? 🏠How can you contribute to positive change in your work or community? We’ve reflected on the Government’s revisions to the National Planning Policy Framework. With a renewed focus on quality design, unlocking grey belt land and prioritising social housing, many changes align with our recommendations. Our Senior Policy Advisor Charlotte Watson explores how these updates could impact the planning system: https://ow.ly/ueOM50UGL4H
