Pleasure to welcome Josh MacAlister MP to our Extra Care development Harbour Place and the Oval Centre in Salterbeck, Workington. Our £19m development being built by Atkinson Building Contractors Ltd is due to complete this Spring and will offer 107 affordable homes for the local community who have care and support needs. Amongst the 107 new homes are 28 affordable rent bungalows for over 55s, Josh met with David and Eileen who moved in this week. At the Oval Centre, Josh also took the time out to speak to Derwent Rotary Club volunteers at the Food Pantry and the Oval Centre Paint Pot and Upcycling Centre, both funded by the Riverside Foundation. Run by Patch, one of our involved residentss, in less than a year the community repaint project has stopped 7,000 litres of paint going to landfill and has already helped over 70 customers.

We’re supporting the latest The G15 case study in the Room To Grow campaign, revealing the shocking scale of stigma faced by social housing residents in London. The ‘Taking the Stigma out of Social Housing: The Residents View’ report launching today in Parliament polled 3,000 social housing residents in London, finding that nearly half (45%) have experienced prejudice or discrimination because of their housing status. https://lnkd.in/eAzw2rtJ Despite these challenges, the report, sponsored by the G15 Residents’ Group, finds that safe, secure social housing provides a vital foundation for families, offering stability and improving health outcomes. Urgent action is now needed to address harmful narratives and perceptions of social housing residents. Last week, Radio 4's Sarah Montague visited our Esther Randall Court service in London to record one of The Together Project's intergenerational Songs & Smiles sessions which bring together young children, their grownups, and older people living in care settings. A great example of some of the wonderful work taking place in our Care and Support services. Lee Buss-Blair, Director of Operations in his National Housing Federation blog calls for consistent recording of veteran status across all statutory funded services so that local housing plans can take into account the veteran population. He adds that a long-term funding mechanism for veteran supported housing is crucial as well as an Affordable Homes Programme adequately funded to meet the Government’s pledge to build 1.5 million homes over this parliament. https://lnkd.in/eEYhPMbp

After meeting the team at our delivery partner, Equans, and striking up a relationship with them while her home was upgraded, Carlisle customer Sarah Spittle was offered some work experience with one of Riverside’s major suppliers. Now, having regained her confidence, Sarah has been provisionally offered a liaison officer role beginning early next year.
