  • Winter can be a challenging season, with shorter days and colder weather. That’s why we’ve created a Winter Wellbeing Calendar — a month’s worth of simple, achievable activities designed to keep you connected to nature and feeling positive all season long. Here are three activities to get you started: 🌱 Spend at least 20 minutes outside each day, whether it’s a walk in the park, tending your garden, or enjoying a coffee on the balcony 🌱 Add some houseplants or natural decorations to your home to bring a touch of greenery and reduce stress 🌱 Plant a tree during the bare-root season to create a lasting feature in your garden and look forward to watching it grow Make it personal by choosing activities that align with what brings you joy. • Happy New Year from everyone at the RHS! 🎉 Our resolution for 2025 is to celebrate the individuality of all gardeners and the stories our gardens and plants tell about us and our lives. Whether you are mad about growing food, or garden to help wildlife and the environment, want the perfect paradise for your pet, or to join your local community gardening group, throughout the year we'll share stories to inspire everyone to garden and spread the joy of gardening. So, over to you now... What's Your Space, Your Story?

  • What will 2025 hold in store for gardeners? RHS Chief Horticulturist, Guy Barter shares his predictions for the year ahead: 🔮 2025 will see the continued rise of small-space gardening, with 9cm potted plants having been proved popular with beginner gardeners, renting tenants and students throughout 2024 🔮 Fruit trees and shrubs as well as perennial vegetables will continue to grow in popularity owing to their reliable annual bounty and support for wildlife diversity 🔮 Green infrastructure is set to flourish, with fixtures such as green roofs and walls helping to regulate temperatures and mitigate flooding in urban areas 📸 RHS Garden Wisley throughout the four seasons

  • Meet Graham, a dedicated volunteer who started his gardening journey with our Community Outreach team at RHS Wisley over two years ago 🌿 What began with learning the gardening basics has grown into a passion for horticulture. Graham completed his Level 1 Horticultural qualification and now looks after glasshouse plants and community allotment beds. He’s also helped build gardens in Guildford and Woking, shared his skills with the public, and supported veterans in growing their own plants. He says, “Seeing the public’s reaction in the gardens makes up for any hardship.” We’re proud of his growth and grateful for the impact he’s made! 👏 Find out more about volunteering with the RHS: https://lnkd.in/gHPCHs3 #Volunteering #Horticulture #RHS #CommunityOutreach

  • As we get ready to say goodbye to 2024, we've asked the RHS National Community Programmes team to share some of this year’s highlights ✨ With so many inspiring and exciting programmes and activities, it was certainly not easy to pick just a few, but here are five things we've loved this year: 🌱 We've been building and planning community-designed wellbeing gardens across England in partnership with the NHS, to give NHS staff and patients much-needed green spaces to rest and relax 🌱 Andy Simpson, RHS Community Outreach Officer for the North West, worked with four different LGBTQ+ youth groups across Salford to create a display for the inaugural RHS Urban Show in April, focusing on starter-plants for people who have never looked after a plant before 🌱 As part of the Level 3 and 4 RHS Diploma in Horticulture Practice, students based at RHS Wisley designed and built a new community food growing and wellbeing garden at ShopWise Eco Food Club in Sheerwater, Surrey 🌱 14,000 people, including school and community gardeners, took part in the RHS Grow With It, our yearly programme encouraging everyone to get growing, connect with their community, and share their knowledge and resources 🌱 Last but certainly not least, this year we celebrated the 60th anniversary of Britain in Bloom, our nationwide gardening initiative that helps build friendships through caring for local green spaces. Plus, we were thrilled to crown Bath in Bloom as the 2024 winners of the Britain in Bloom Finals! With much to look forward to in 2025, visit our website to keep updated on all of our upcoming community gardening activities and get involved: https://lnkd.in/dXc4VDnr

  • The 2025 Pantone Colour of the Year - Mocha Mousse - is a shade of brown that's been described as having ‘warm, natural earthiness’, something we can definitely relate to in the horticultural world! Hues of Mocha Mousse can be found in ornamental grasses like the Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ferner Osten’ at RHS Garden Rosemoor (Photo 1), interesting tree bark such as that of Betula nigra (Photo 2), mushrooms and even in coffee coloured plants like Heuchera 'Mocha'PBR. • Earlier this month, Storm Darragh claimed one of the most iconic trees at RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon, when high winds up to 55mph toppled the veteran English oak that was sitting at the heart of the Formal Garden. But the fallen tree won't go to waste! Curator Jonathan Webster shared plans to move the fallen trunk to an oak copse in the garden's woodland, where it can decay naturally and support the ecosystem of the woods. Dead wood provides food and habitat for many species, including insects, mammals, fungi and lichen, and releases nutrients back into the soil as it breaks down. Furthermore, with the tree snapping just above its base and leaving behind a stump with its root system intact, there's hope that the oak may grow again 🌳 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d7jWYHRH
