What an excellent deep dive into North Yorkshire’s planning landscape at tonight’s North Yorkshire Society of Architects ‘ event in Harrogate! We covered it all—neighbourhood plans, policy changes, the five-year supply, and beyond. A huge thank you to Kathryn Jukes for her brilliant presentation and for patiently answering our endless stream of questions. We were so engrossed that, given the chance, we probably would have kept going all night. We were also so proud to see architecture students in the room—some traveling all the way from Liverpool for the event! It’s fantastic to see more future architects engaging with the challenges of our industry—our profession is in good hands! ❤️ Great discussions, great company—who knew planning policy could be this captivating? 🏆 RIBA Yorkshire Practice of the Month: Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher (CJCT) 🏆 We’re delighted to highlight the three projects that Carey Jones Chapman Tolcher (CJCT), as our RIBA Yorkshire Practice of the Month, wanted to share with us: 🌉 The Junction A landmark 665-home Build-to-Rent (BTR) development nestled along the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal, built around the Grade II-listed Monk Bridge viaduct. This historic railway structure has been reimagined as a publicly accessible high-line park, connecting residents to nature and the city. • 19 viaduct arches house commercial spaces, creating a dynamic urban hub. • A revitalized canal-side landscape encourages public interaction and enhances Leeds’ underutilized waterways. • Completed in two phases, with the final buildings delivered in November 2023. 🏗 Latitude Sites Expanding the Monk Bridge regeneration, CJCT partnered with HUB Residential to create 951 BTR homes across two striking developments: 🔹 Leeds I (Latitude Purple) – 463 apartments, completed in May 2024, offering residents direct access to the high-line park, pedestrian links to the city, and thoughtfully designed communal spaces. 🔹 Leeds II (Latitude Blue) – A bold architectural statement, set for completion in August 2025: • 26- and 31-storey towers form an iconic silhouette on the Leeds skyline. • Inspired by the iron ingots once produced on-site, the octagonal towers soften their visual impact and improve wind microclimate conditions. • Juliet and projecting balconies enhance light, views, and residents’ experience. 🌿 Kirkstall Road A riverfront residential-led scheme designed to create a greener, more pedestrian-friendly Leeds. This development balances history, sustainability, and modern living: • 618 BTR homes spread across five buildings (10 to 13 storeys). • 50% public realm, featuring a riverside square, green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly routes. • Brickwork-clad facades and colonnaded walkways pay homage to the site’s industrial heritage, blending past and present seamlessly. Future architects, let’s showcase the talent of the North! 🌟 This is an opportunity not to be missed—let’s prove what we’re capable of! Stay tuned and get involved! #FutureArchitects #TalentOfTheNorth #Architecture
Entries are open for our RIBA Journal Future Architects Film Competition 📽️ Open internationally to entrants studying for, or in between, Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3, our new competition aims to showcase the best up-and-coming visual communicators in architecture. In past years, this has been a writing contest. But given the increasing importance of film in capturing, promoting and understanding the built environment, we’ve flipped the script. This year, we’re asking you to turn your hand to filmmaking and produce a video of less than two minutes that would be suitable for social media platforms. Films could be lo-fi or crisp, witty or serious in tone, and feature long pans or fast cuts. Pick up your camera and start creating. ⏰ Deadline: 7 April, 2pm ➡️ Enter now: https://ow.ly/1Jqp50UTsNk #RIBAFutureArchitects #StudyArchitecture
