Paul, who has cerebral palsy and a learning disability, breaks down misconceptions and is a valued member of his community in Leeds. He’s involved with lots of projects in his local community, this includes volunteering with Leeds Beckett University, where he sits on the interview panel for prospective student social workers. He is an Expert By Experience, and volunteers his time to teach student social workers, nurses and tutors to understand the life of someone with a disability. Paul feels his role as an Expert By Experience is an extremely valuable part of the training process for student social workers because it gives them insight into the day-to-day challenges faced by a person with a disability and allows them to ask questions that may help inform their practice. Paul said, "The work I do helps people that don't come face to face with disabled people in everyday life. It helps them to understand, and that’s important." Paul also spoke about how his work makes him feel and why it’s important to him, “My work in the community gives me the confidence to have a full and active life. I get a lot of joy, comfort and experience from working within the community. I also feel respected, and to me, that's important. Nobody has ever spoken down to me or treated me any differently to anyone else.” We asked Paul if he felt part of the local community. He said, “I feel I am a true member of the community! My disability is a part of who I am, but I hope that people look past the disability and see me for who I am." #InternationalDayOfAcceptance

Have you heard about game therapy? Game Therapy UK is an exciting new charity providing innovative, evidence-based therapeutic games (“Dungeons and Dragons Therapy”) to groups at risk of social isolation. This includes a wide range of groups, such as people experiencing homelessness, people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, the neurodivergent community and military veterans exposed to psychological trauma and PTSD. Projects include trauma-based therapy for people experiencing homelessness and survivors of modern day slavery in SJOG services. The feedback from those who attend these sessions has been fantastic, highlighting the positive impact on their mental health and overall wellbeing. Suicide prevention starts with awareness. Last week, SJOG colleagues gained essential skills through a Suicide First Aid Course. The training was delivered by Steve Whittle from Tough to Talk—a fantastic charity focused on addressing the gender mental health gap and supporting male mental health. The session was a multi-media, interactive experience. SJOG's Autism and Suicide Prevention Service Manager, Rachael, shared her thoughts: "We learned how to reduce stigma around suicidality, how to conduct suicide prevention interventions, and how to protect our own mental health in the process." A big thank you to Steve for delivering this valuable and informative training to our team. Not all heroes wear capes... some wear hi-vis! We'd like to say a huge thank you to the kind local farmer who cleared the snow from our supported living service in Leyburn North Yorkshire. Your help made a big difference! Our Northern Supported Living Services enable adults with special care needs, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health issues to live in their own home with the support they need to do so. Our staff teams support residents 24/7, so having this extra help made a huge difference—thank you! Image credit: Violet Riley

We are looking forward to being of more help to more people, with plans to open new services in Hertfordshire. We currently provide residential care at our service The Minims in Hatfield, where we offer 24-hour care and support for adults with learning disabilities. Soon, we will be providing support through our new supported living services, which enable adults with special care needs, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health issues to live in their own home with the support they need to do so. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to live independently and to make their own choices and decisions about their lives. In our supported living services, we offer support to develop life skills to assist independent living, learning and working. We will continue to meet need wherever we find it, and through these new services, we will be of more help to more people.
