As we approach the end of #LGBTQ+ History Month, the BeYou LGBTQ+ staff network invited all colleagues to learn more about the history and the contributions and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community at a LGBTQ+ History Month drop-in event. This theme this year is activism and social change. The event highlighted actions like listening, showing empathy and creating safe spaces for open conversations, which make a big difference in fostering a culture where diversity is celebrated. Here at Sandwell Council, #inclusion is not just about policies or initiatives. It is one of our organisational values and it’s about how we support one another every day. #WeAreSandwell #LGBTQhistorymonth #Diversity

A proud moment for everyone at Sandwell Council… We’re delighted to announce that we’ve been shortlisted in the coveted #LGCAwards 2025 in the ‘Most Improved Council’ category. We’ve been shortlisted following the rapid progress we’ve made in turning around how we operate and deliver services for residents since exiting a two-year period of government intervention – the quickest ever turnaround. The council is now determined to continue this rapid improvement and tell a new story about Sandwell. Our values: Customer Focused, Ambitious, Accountable, One Team and Inclusive underpin everything we do and how we deliver services. We want to say a big thank you to all our staff, councillors and our partners. There are so many reasons to be proud of our borough as we continue our journey to become an outstanding council. 👉 Read the press release https://lnkd.in/eNPjjZhj The winners will be announced on Wednesday 11 June. #WeAreSandwell #LGCAwards #Awards Shokat Lal

Malcolm X 60th Anniversary - Visit to Smethwick In February 1965, Malcolm X visited #Smethwick to see for himself the segregation and racial prejudice that non-whites experienced in the Midlands. The visit came at a pivotal moment in the international battle for equality. His visit to an area with a growing Asian and Caribbean immigrant population confirmed his conception of a worldwide struggle that united all oppressed people of colour to work together. Now 60 years later, Sandwell Council is committed to celebrating #diversity, building strong #communities and improving the quality of life for local people in #Sandwell. 👉 Watch the video of when Malcolm X visited the West Midlands https://lnkd.in/eG6hKyhk #WeAreSandwell #CelebrateSandwell #Communities Shokat Lal

Hands-on learning in action: Plastering students visit Sandwell Council’s West Bromwich Indoor Market site 🔨 This week, our Plastering Level 1 & 2 learners had the fantastic opportunity to visit Sandwell Council’s West Bromwich Indoor Market construction site, gaining first-hand insight into a live project and the skills needed in the industry. The tour was led by Warren Bland, Site Manager from Interclass, who shared his career journey - giving learners an inside look at how he built his expertise in the construction sector and the opportunities available to them. It was brilliant to see the enthusiasm from our learners, particularly as they explored the possibility of future work experience placements on-site in the coming months. Experiences like this are key to developing technical skills, industry knowledge, and professional confidence. A huge thank you to Warren and the team at Interclass for inspiring the next generation of construction professionals! We are delighted to receive the The Victorian Society Birmingham and West Midlands Group Conservation Award 2024 for the restoration of West Bromwich Town Hall and Central Library. Thank you to our partners and colleagues who have been part of this amazing restoration journey. Read more in the press release https://lnkd.in/e3Jd7BZs
The Victorian Society Birmingham and West Midlands Group Conservation Award 2024 has gone to Sandwell Council for its fine restoration of West Bromwich Town Hall and Library. The Society's Birmingham and West Midlands Group has announced its 10th Award today, sponsored by Hortons' Estate Limited, which goes to a restoration that reuses historic community buildings in a project for the people by the people. The High Street’s striking Grade II Town Hall and Library where the hall was designed by Alexander and Henman, opening in 1874 – 5, with the Central Library by Weller and Proud, added in 1907. The Central Library was a gift to the people of West Bromwich from the astonishingly generous Scottish-American philanthropist and industrialist, Andrew Carnegie. Fifty per cent of project funds were spent within a 20 mile radius, with 135 local crafts and trades people involved, alongside 18 work experience students and seven apprentices. The building contractors and restoration specialists involved were Morgan Sindall Construction, NRA, and Henley Construction Management Group. The lead designers and architect for the project were APEC Architects.
