Investigating new and better treatments is the area of sarcoma research we have invested the most in so far. By investing in this research, we can discover more effective therapies, which attack the cancer more precisely, reduce harmful side effects, and improve survival rates and quality of life for patients. Our funding supported Professor Adrienne Flanagan's team at UCL make major strides in understanding chordoma - a rare sarcoma and identifying potential treatments. The team tested over 1,000 different drugs and found that existing treatments used in other cancers targeting EGFR – a receptor involved in cancer growth - could effectively kill chordoma cells in the lab. This research helped launch the first randomised clinical trial for chordoma, paving the way for potential new therapies. While these results are promising, it's important to note that more research is needed to ensure it is an effective and safe and safe treatment option for chordoma. The team’s findings were featured in six scientific journal publications, including a significant paper on EGFR inhibitors in The Journal of Pathology. Thanks to your support, these breakthroughs could change the future of treatment for people with sarcoma. Learn more about our Research here: https://lnkd.in/e4NsRz3v

Our thoughts about Liz Hatton, who has died. Kerry Reeves-Kneip, Director of Communications at Sarcoma UK said: “It is with profound sadness that we learn of the death of Liz Hatton, a talented young photographer who touched many hearts and whose life was tragically cut short by sarcoma. At Sarcoma UK, we are deeply moved by her story and the courage she demonstrated in facing this challenging disease. We were privileged to have met Liz and her mother, working with them to share her powerful story and raise awareness about the impact of sarcoma. To work with them was a humbling reminder of the strength, resilience, and hope that can emerge even in the most challenging circumstances. Our collaboration to bring her story to the press was not just about raising awareness, but about humanising the experience of young people facing rare and aggressive cancers. Liz Hatton's remarkable photograph of the Princess of Wales captured a moment of genuine human connection that resonated with people around the world. Her talent and spirit shine as a testament to the potential and resilience of young people facing serious illness. Her passing is a stark reminder of the urgent need for continued research and better treatments for sarcoma - a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects too many young lives. Our thoughts are with Liz's family, friends, and all those who knew and loved her during this immensely difficult time. We honour Liz's memory and her contribution to raising awareness about sarcoma, hoping that her legacy will inspire continued support for research and understanding of this devastating disease.” These photos were taken by Liz at Charles Geoffrey’s London Fashion Week show.
