Today was all about medical technology - one of London's fast-growing innovation led tech sectors. Fascinating visit to London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) at King's College London with Nicolas Huber the Director of Commercial Operations and London Higher. Good to meet the team from Hypervision Surgical including COO Jaco Jacobs. Hypervision Surgical Ltd is a spin-out company formed from King's College London and was founded by a team of clinicians, medical imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) experts. Based on safe light alone, they equip clinicians with advanced computer-assisted tissue analysis for improved surgical precision and patient safety. LIHE is a unique institute for pioneering start-ups and SMEs that are advancing new medical technologies. In a purpose built building based in the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust St. Thomas' hospital opposite Parliament, which is dedicated to bringing MedTech innovations to patients and the market, LIHE offers hands-on executive support for medical innovations from across the UK, and gives MedTech entrepreneurs the confidence to proceed at pace from bench to patient bedside to boardroom. Among innovations they have a full operating theatre for testing out equipment and a direct and immediate link to patients for clinical trials, evaluation and certification. Partners include Siemens Healthineers, NVIDIA, Wickenstones Ltd, deepc, XARlabs, Fraiya Ltd and Science & Engineering Health Technologies Alliance (SEHTA). Good to have a chance to talk to the London Higher Enterprise Network co-chaired by Adam Doyle of University of East London and Catherine Tate of King's College London about the Growth Plan which is being developed by Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and London Councils.

🔬 The Life Sciences Career Pathway Programme, brought to you by Scientifically Speaking, is an educational programme that aims to equip the residents of Lambeth with a foundational understanding of the life sciences sector, enhance their personal and professional development, and prepare them for successful careers within the #lifesciences. This CPD accredited programme is intended for students considering a career in the life sciences, and for individuals considering a career change towards the life sciences.

The #MyLifeSc1ence project, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with support of Mayor of London and London Borough of Lambeth is a fantastic opportunity to work with young people from our local schools and colleges, and we can't wait to see the films they produce. On the first day, students visited the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE) to learn more about MedTech and Life Sciences, and had a tour of the Surgical & Interventional Engineering labs. Kawal Rhode, Professor of Biomedical Engineering shared his own career journey with them and reflected "I think it resonated well with the students to know that career paths can often be a zigzag with plenty of hurdles and challenges." Valentina Vitiello, Head of Clinical Translation and Governance at LIHE added "It felt great to contribute to the We Rise project, as interacting with young minds is always more than just sharing knowledge, it's about lighting a path toward possibilities. The initiative will offer accessible career pathways through workshops and mentorship, while empowering local residents to explore opportunities in healthcare and medical technology. 👩⚕️ Job Design Lab (JDL) is a place-based programme that helps communities and businesses across the UK to prepare for the future of work. Over the next 6 months, JDL will bring together participants from Lambeth to take part in immersive workshop experiences, to explore and shape future work opportunities in the Health and Life Sciences sector. The programme will be delivered in partnership with local community organisations Spiral Skills and Oval Learning. JDL is created by systems innovators Alt/Now and The Liminal Space, a creative agency with a reputation for delivering high impact public engagement experiences. We are delighted to announce that Professor Graham Lord has been appointed as Senior Vice President (Health & Life Sciences) and Executive Director of King's Health Partners (KHP).   A leading clinician-scientist, Professor Lord is currently the Vice-President and Dean of The University of Manchester Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. He is also an Honorary Consultant Transplant Nephrologist at Manchester NHS Foundation Trust and Executive Director of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre.   Professor Graham Lord said: “Healthcare systems across the world are under enormous and increasing pressure. I am convinced that by aligning the strategic direction of all of our partners, we can identify key actions to deliver high quality health and care, driven by research and innovation, in a sustainable way. The Centre is hosted by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and led by Prof Dag Aarsland, Director of the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, School of Academic Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and lead consultant for the South London and Maudsley Remote Brain Health Clinic, together with Prof Clive Ballard at University of Exeter Medical School. The Centre's goal is to improve the brain health of older people through better treatment and support, helping people to live longer, healthier lives. Through this centre, we will be working with group of brain-health researchers working at the leading edge of brain health research, including doctors, scientists, digital developers, statisticians and social care researchers. We work with a large group of older adults, including people from a range of ethnicities, ages, locations and backgrounds to make sure our research truly listens to the voice of people affected by brain health and ageing. The HealthTech Research Centre in Brain Health is funded thorough a £2.9m grant from NIHR to aid diagnosis and treatment of dementia. We also have a large group of organisations from industry who will advise on our research and provide cutting-edge technology and know-how to ensure our work is at the forefront of brain health research and clinical translation. It was a pleasure to host the NYC Builds Bio+ visit to the partners of SC1 London Life Sciences Innovation District today. The delegates hosted by Nancy J Kelley, Ryan Matenchuk and colleagues explored breadth and diversity of innovation in health and life sciences in London.
