  • Last week we welcomed our network of strategic partners to Science Creates for a festive celebration, rounding off an incredible year for our ecosystem. The afternoon featured presentations from Head of Platform, Francis Lister, and Innovation Manager, Lucy McGowan, reflecting on the community’s achievements throughout 2024. Highlights included: Science Creates members launching new products, winning prestigious awards, and securing impressive pre-seed to Series A funding rounds as well as the graduation of 20 Engineering Biology entrepreneurs from Cohort 2.0 of our Accelerate programme. Looking ahead to 2025, we shared plans to open our third Bristol incubator, OMX, and vision to support even more Deep Tech ventures. We then wrapped up with an interactive, Christmas-themed quiz, followed by mulled wine and mince pies. Thank you all for contributing to the the growing success of our Deep Tech ecosystem throughout the year and joining us to celebrate. We look forward to building on this year’s success together for an even more impactful 2025. • FOLIUM Science, a leading biotech in microbiome innovation and Science Creates member, has gained approval in Brazil for the innovative additive component in its new animal feed product, BiomElix® One. Developed using FOLIUM Science’s CRISPR technology, BiomElix® One supports healthier animal guts by modulating microbiomes and targeting unwanted bacteria with extreme precision. This product not only enhances animal welfare and feed efficiency but also reduces reliance on antibiotics and the environmental impact of livestock farming. With Brazil among the world’s largest producers of poultry, beef, and pork, this approval represents a significant step forward for sustainable agriculture. Congratulations to the entire FOLIUM Science team! Read more below. #deeptech #sustainablefarming #CRISPR #biotech

🌍 Innovative feed ingredient harnessing CRISPR in its natural microbiome setting gains approval FOLIUM Science, a UK based leader in microbiome bioscience, is pleased to announce that the innovative component for its new product, BiomElix One, has been approved by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) for use as an animal feed additive and included in their Positive List of Feed Ingredients. This approval comes after extensive review of efficacy data in poultry and detailed evaluation by Brazilian authorities. BiomElix One was developed using FOLIUM Science’s proprietary CRISPR-Cas based technology platform called Guided Biotics. It uses natural biological systems to modulate the microbiome improving productivity by removing unwanted microbes and bacteria, while preserving the beneficial ones, resulting in a healthier animal gut. BiomElix One has previously received endorsement as non-GMO from the Brazilian National BioSafety Committee (CTNBio) under its 'new breeding technique' normative. This safety endorsement came as our technology utilises naturally occurring microbiome pathways to improve the microbiome’s effectiveness and productivity with extreme precision and without unwanted disruption of the animal gut. Brazil is one of the world’s largest producers of poultry, beef, and pork, making the approval of BiomElix One main component an important step forward in sustainable agriculture. Rising concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) means new technology has a big role to play. Now, BiomElix One can be part of the toolkit for targeted management of productivity in the face of all Salmonella, and help address challenges such as improving feed efficiency, enhancing animal welfare, and reducing the environmental impact of livestock farming. “This is a significant milestone for us as a business as well as for the animal nutrition industry” says FOLIUM Science CEO Ed Fuchs. “Not only does it demonstrate our unique expertise in the use of CRISPR technology to manage microbiomes and support an animal’s gut, but it also supports the industry’s goals to meet consumer demands for meat produced without excessive use of antibiotics. This may be the dawn of next generation probiotics, but the hard work is yet to come" We’re seeking strategic partners for large-scale pre-commercial studies in Brazil to further demonstrate BiomElix One’s commercial impact on productivity and food safety. If you’re passionate about transforming agriculture and want to collaborate on our journey, reach out to us! Together, we can bring out the best in nature. #Innovation #CRISPR #SustainableFarming #FoodSafety #AnimalHealth #Biotechnology #MicrobiomeManagement #AgricultureRevolution 🔗 Visit us at https://lnkd.in/eZJkMKfD and follow FOLIUM Science for updates. Let’s shape the future of farming — one innovation at a time! 🚀

  • Francis Lister and Lucy McGowan headed to London last week to represent Science Creates at #SynbiTECH2024, the UK’s leading conference for engineering biology. The event opened with a keynote speech from Science Minister Lord Patrick Vallance, who emphasised the Government’s commitment to scaling engineering biology on a national level as well as recognising the importance of: ▪️Continued funding of early-stage research to drive new spinouts ▪️Strategic regional clusters throughout the UK ▪️Growing an expert talent pipeline through specialised training programmes like centres for doctoral training ▪️Thinking beyond the UK to attract global talent and investment ▪️Considering the everyday citizen behind the Government’s decision-making It was also great to hear both Science Creates and the wider Bristol innovation ecosystem mentioned by Lord Vallance as examples of places already actively working to scale this sector. A huge thank you to all the speakers and SynbiCITE for organising such a thought-provoking event, bringing together a community passionate about shaping the future of engineering biology. Continue reading below for more insights from Francis Lister on the event. #engbio #syntheticbiology #deeptech #scaleup

A fantastic start to #SynbiTECH2024 with keynotes from Lord Patrick Vallance and Antheia, Inc. CEO Christina Smolke followed by two brilliant panel discussions with industry leaders and UK-leading Engineering Biology entrepreneurs on scaling up and scaling success. Every speaker has shared loads of useful information so while there's already too much detail to summarise everything from this first day in one post, it's been absolutely great to hear both the government's commitment to the growth of Engineering Biology in the UK and the clarity in the strategy for the future. So, kicking off with my take homes from Patrick Vallance's keynote:  1. A clear focus and commitment from the government on solving the very real problems with scaling Eng Bio: infrastructure, regulation and investment landscape. Great to hear Science Creates mentioned as part of this! 2. Highlighting the essential need to continue funding the early stage research that empowers the growing number of spinouts in Eng Bio in the UK. 3. The importance of talent and the role of Eng Bio CDT programmes like EngBio Centre for Doctoral Training an exciting partnership between University of Bristol and the University of Oxford 4. Always remember the *citizen* behind the government's support and decision-making strategy. This is a big part of the “why" behind the government support of areas like Eng Bio. I.e. Outsized growth opportunities, more jobs, better healthcare options for all of society, and greener, healthier materials. 5. The importance of strategically-focused regional clusters in places like Bristol, Manchester, Norwich, Edinburgh, and the Golden Triangle. 6. (Great to hear) While the UK is well-placed to unlock Eng Bio, we are not a closed-off island. We need to be thinking globally and attracting global talent and investment to support this growth. Christina's talk about her company Antheia, Inc. was fantastic and provided some exceptional examples of why Eng Bio makes a great replacement for traditional “buckets and solvent” style chemical synthesis. For one of the products Antheia, Inc. is working on, we are talking: -No toxic solvents  -10000x less land use -50x production time reduction -20x yield increase -2-20x cost reduction. Pretty great stats for the improvements Eng Bio can bring to traditional industries. If you are in Eng Bio and couldn't make the conference but want to know more, watch this space or follow Science Creates. I'll be doing my best to summarise the rest of her talk and more from both panels with a focus on founders building Eng Bio companies. An amazing conference so far, thanks to all the speakers and organisers!
