Seiche is proud to celebrate Simon McLaughlin as he nears the completion of his IDCORE EngD. Simon recently attended the closing dinner for the IDCORE 2020 cohort, hosted by the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh. The evening marked the end of the funded period of study with sponsor companies, and we’re delighted to have supported Simon throughout this significant chapter of his academic and professional development. The dinner brought together the entire cohort, their partners, the IDCORE board of directors, and supervisors who joined to recognise the hard work and achievements of all involved. It was a fantastic celebration of collaboration, innovation, and dedication in advancing offshore renewable energy. Congratulations Simon on reaching this milestone! As part of the Morlais tidal energy project in north Wales, the Marinus LiDAR buoy has been relaunched near Holyhead. This cutting-edge buoy is equipped with advanced monitoring technologies, including sonar imaging, acoustic monitoring, and video imaging, to track marine wildlife and gather vital environmental data over the next 12 months. This research plays a critical role in ensuring sustainable practices as Morlais prepares for operational status in 2026, contributing to the growth of the tidal energy sector. By monitoring marine mammals and birds, the project aims to refine its Environmental Monitoring and Management Plan (EMMP), safeguarding local wildlife while advancing renewable energy innovation. In this new mission, the Marinus buoy will also assist in developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) monitoring tools, keeping the system adaptive to both Morlais’s needs and the broader tidal energy industry. Environmental monitoring will continue throughout the project, with findings shared to enhance industry-wide practices and drive innovation in marine renewable energy. This milestone highlights the importance of combining environmental stewardship with technological advancement, and we look forward to the insights this research will deliver for the future of sustainable energy.
