Driven by a commitment to building sustainable and economically efficient solutions, our team at Clarence Correctional Centre (CLA) has achieved a significant environmental milestone through the successful application of biosolids to land within the facility. This innovative approach has reduced methane emissions by up to 90%—equivalent to taking 200 cars off the road for a year—and saved the centre approximately $50,000 in transport and landfill costs. The biosolids, a by-product from the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) at the centre, were historically disposed of in landfills, contributing significantly to harmful methane emissions. With an annual disposal requirement of roughly 140 tonnes based on the current occupancy, the centre faced a considerable challenge to manage this waste sustainably. Despite harsh weather conditions and tight time constraints, our team successfully navigated these obstacles. Rainfall totals in May were 25.2% above the area average, delaying the application process and threatening the functionality of the WWTP. The application area, characterised by fine clay subsoil, required extended drying periods before heavy machinery could access the site. Despite these challenges, the project has delivered substantial environmental and economic benefits. The practice has recovered around 6,900kg of phosphorus and 9,300kg of nitrogen, replacing an equivalent of 56.4 tonnes of CO2 associated with agricultural fertiliser production. To put this into perspective, the amount of nitrogen recovered is equivalent to the nitrogen content in about 930,000 litres of cow milk! This not only addresses waste management challenges but also contributes to significant environmental and economic benefits, paving the way for more sustainable practices in the future. Josh Hollington, the Plumbing Supervisor at CLA, is a driving force behind the centre's sustainability initiatives. With a diverse career background in plumbing, mining, and bridge construction, Josh joined Serco in February 2020 and quickly established himself as a key figure in the centre's environmental efforts. "Since joining, my role has evolved significantly. I now lead the hydraulic services team, oversee maintenance, repair activities, and lifecycle replacement in line with contractual obligations,” Josh explained. As his role has expanded, so has his autonomy to innovate, aiming to improve processes, pre-empt issues, and showcase impactful change in environmental management. This successful initiative at CLA serves as a model for other facilities around the world, demonstrating that with innovative thinking and determination, significant environmental improvements are achievable. #ESG #EnvironmentalInitiatives #Sustainability #GreenFuture #SercoASPAC #ImpactABetterFuture

Do you know what a Therapeutic Community is? 🤔 A Therapeutic Community (TC) is a long-term, accredited intervention used in the prison service, aimed at reducing the risk of reoffending. TCs are based on the idea that people living together and belonging to a community are able to change through their interpersonal experiences. There are formal therapy groups each day, but therapy is happening all day every day, not just during meetings or one-on-one sessions. Test your prison service knowledge with our poll below! 👇

Serco to give greater support to US military We have won two contracts in the US, totalling £174 million ($226 million), to support veterans transitioning back into civilian life and to provide psychological health services for serving US military personnel. These wins reflect our strong capabilities supporting armed forces members at every stage of their military career, in areas such as military recruitment, training, development, health services and jobs support for veterans.   Mark Irwin, Group Chief Executive of Serco, said:   “Serco has a proud history of supporting the military in multiple countries internationally. We are able to deliver services throughout the entire course of an individual’s military life. From helping governments to recruit the right personnel, to providing them with training, development and health support during their time in uniform through to providing services which facilitate people leaving the military and adjusting to civilian life.   “I am delighted that, through these contract wins, Serco can strengthen our delivery of service to the US military and its personnel and impact a better future for them.” https://lnkd.in/eDuh_kFH #ImpactABetterFuture

I am proud to have represented Serco at the Submarine Institute of Australia’s 12th Biennial Conference in Canberra yesterday. I had the privilege of sharing insights on the urgent need for innovative workforce solutions in the Australian submarine community—an area that is more critical than ever as we embark on our nuclear-powered submarine mission. During my presentation, I addressed the significant workforce mobilisation underway and the need for a collaborative approach to develop an agile, skilled workforce. Drawing from lessons in the US and UK nuclear submarine programs, I discussed how we can create a tailored workforce framework to meet the demands of the AUKUS agreement, while fostering an institutional culture of safety. As a longstanding advisor across government and defence, I highlighted how partnerships with industry leaders like Serco can enhance training and create a truly integrated national workforce for Australia’s defence future. The discussions were robust, and it was an incredible opportunity to connect with industry leaders and policymakers who are equally committed to shaping the future of Australia’s defence capabilities. Thank you to the Submarine Institute of Australia Institute of Australia for hosting this crucial event.
