We are excited to share another case study for works carried out at the “BUR26” project on behalf of Advance-plus Murphy MWH Treatment United Utilities. SGC Civil Engineering were tasked with the removal of / installation of a new penstock in an existing 4.6 metre diameter, 6 metre deep shaft. The shaft captured sewage / storm water within a 10 mile radius of Padiham and the surrounding areas. Due to its location and the aforementioned catchment area, isolating the shaft during the works wasn't feasible. Consequently, an over pumping setup was installed to maintain flows. Owing to the site's environmental sensitivity; particularly concerning otters, working hours were restricted. Excavations, including the shaft itself, had to be covered outside these hours, necessitating a temporary cover slab install. However, the installation of the temporary cover slab required the removal of the over pumping system, constraining productive working windows. Given the inherent risks of working within a live sewer, SGC Civil Engineering devised a rigorous safe system of work, incorporating temporary stank plates to create a dry point within the shaft, thus mitigating risks to operatives. Despite these challenges, SGC Civil Engineering successfully completed the project within the designated timeframe. This case study illustrates our capabilities and collaborative working approach, reaffirming our commitment to delivering exceptional workmanship and ensuring client satisfaction. A challenging but still very rewarding and enjoyable 2023 at Burnley WwTW; All water retaining structures have passed their waterightness tests and have been backfilled, most of the large diameter deep pipework is in, 1 of the 2 steel portal frame buildings is up, clad, and internally finished, the HV upgrade is complete and both the mechanical and electrical teams have started in earnest. A busy year would be an understatement! Congrats to the whole team for the tremendous effort they've put in over the past 12 months.
