Simpsons Malt is a family-owned, B Corp maltster supplying quality malt to the brewing, distilling and food industries.

About us

Simpsons Malt Limited was established by J.P. Simpson in Alnwick, Northumberland, back in 1862. It has remained a family-owned and run business throughout its history and has stayed truly independent in what is an ever-changing market place. Our customers predominantly use our malted products in the production of beer, whisky and food products and are based both in the UK and abroad. We have supplied malt to companies in more than 35 countries over the last 20 years. We prefer to source our raw materials from the UK, of which malting barley is the most common. We established our own merchanting company, McCreath Simpson in 1980, which became McCreath, Simpson & Prentice (MSP) in 1982. As a result, through MSP we are able to procure the majority of our raw material requirements each year.

  • 100% FSA Gold for distilling wheat 🌾 We're delighted to announce that we have supported more than 120 contracted farmers in achieving the UK’s first Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA) Gold verification for distilling wheat, as part of ongoing sustainability efforts with the Chivas Brothers Strathclyde Growers Group. It means that our entire supply of distilling wheat to Chivas Brothers, the Pernod Ricard business dedicated to Scotch whisky and maker of Ballantine’s, is verified to the globally recognised standard from SAI Platform. By attaining the highest performance level of FSA Gold, it verifies that farmers involved in Chivas Brothers Strathclyde Growers Group are utilising first-class sustainable farming practices across a range of topic areas, including soil and nutrient management, crop protection, biodiversity, community impact and employee welfare. Until now, the highest verification awarded to any UK wheat Farm Management Group (FMG) has been equivalent to FSA Silver. This FMG joins two others that we have for malting barley, both of which have 90+% FSA Gold. • Cover crops - what have we learned? 🤔 Cover cropping is a method that has been hailed for its ability to improve soil health, while also helping to boost efficiency and sustainability on farm 🌱 Through having agricultural merchanting division, McCreath Simpson & Prentice, integrated within our business, we have been able to trial the sowing of cover crops prior to spring barley for many years down at our spring barley variety trials site at Beal Farm in Northumberland 🚜 In that time, we have gathered a significant amount of data - so, do the perceived benefits of cover crops align with what we've found? 🍃 In our latest video, Technical Officer Rosie Hamilton delves deeper into cover cropping and shares her three key takeaways from our years of growing them 💬 Watch the full video here 👉 https://buff.ly/40SGU3j

  • Ready to hit the road 🛣️ This time next week, we'll be in the Italian coastal resort of Rimini with our distributor Mr Malt for BB Tech Expo, which takes place from February 16-18 📆 BB Tech Expo is always a fantastic way to kick-off the year's trade shows as we not only spend some quality time with the Mr Malt team, but we also get the opportunity to catch-up with Italian brewers who use our malts and sample their latest beers 🍻 The event is swiftly followed by Beer Experience at De Koninck Brewery in Antwerp on February 24, which we're attending with our distributor in Belgium and the Netherlands, HVB-IMTC 🌍 Read more on the events here 👉 https://buff.ly/3QbjEZl

  • Gentle roast, rich flavour 🤎 Pale Chocolate Malt brings a smooth, mild roasted character with notes of cocoa and toasted nuts. Ideal for stouts, porters and darker ales where subtle roastiness is desired. If you’re a brewer in North America, Pale Chocolate has recently become available via our distributor RahrBSG and with us still being in the winter months, it’s the perfect opportunity to give it a try. • June 2023 ⏩ January 2025 With the Energy Centre at our Tweed Valley Maltings currently going through the commissioning stage, take a look back to see how the project - in partnership with AMP Clean Energy - has progressed from the groundwork stage more than 18 months ago ⏮ Once fully operational later this year, the Energy Centre - comprising a 12MW electric boiler powered by curtailed wind energy and three 6MW biomass boilers - will give us up to an 80% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions at this site, and up to a 55% reduction company-wide. With thanks to Media Borne for capturing the footage throughout the construction 📽️ Read more 👉 https://buff.ly/3ZURAzG

  • A peek inside our Energy Centre 👀 The Energy Centre at our Tweed Valley Maltings is currently in the commissioning stage and, once it is fully up and running later this year, it will give us up to an 80% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions at this site - and up to a 55% reduction company-wide. That’s because this project is combining heat electrification with biomass energy to decarbonise the energy-intensive kilning stage of the malting process 🌾 Last month, Chair Richard Simpson joined Chief Engineer Pat Richards on a tour of the facility, led by AMP Clean Energy's Head of Customer Solutions, Stuart Reid, to check out the progress of the project 🚶 Given the considerable reduction in our Scope 1 & 2 emissions as a result of this project, this will positively impact not only our own objectives of achieving net zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions and carbon neutral malting barley production by 2030, but also the sustainability objectives of the distilling and brewing customers who receive malt produced at this site 🥃 Read more 👉 https://buff.ly/3ZURAzG
