Today is World #Diabetes Awareness Day 2024. At Siretta we have some staff members who have Type 1 Diabetes, one of them being Paul Gibbons, here is his story: Before I was diagnosed with Diabetes I was living in Australia. Over the course of the previous year I had lost about 5 stone in weight and was enjoying being skinny. I thought that this was down to my new lifestyle in Australia being really active and getting involved with lots of water sports and hiking etc. Towards the end of the year some friends came to visit and were seriously concerned about my weight and my friends insisted that I needed to go to the doctors and get checked out, so I went to the Doctors and explained the situation and they gave me a fasting blood test. The following day I was called back in and was confronted with 2 doctors, 1 nurse and a psychologist… They proceeded to tell me that I had Type 1 Diabetes and that I would not be able to dive anymore and would have to leave my job immediately. I thought to myself, but I have 20 students half way through their course… not realising the impact that this would have on my life moving forwards! I was 28 at the time and this was considered very late to get type 1 diabetes so I had a whole raft of additional tests which basically just confirmed that I was a late bloomer. Over the course of the next 10 years and following many hypo’s, some of which are still embarrassing to this day and others which caused me some serious concerns about my own safety I finally managed to get a little bit more of a handle on how to control things. One of the biggest problems is dealing with #hypo’s whilst I am asleep as you have no warning signs and eventually wake up in a state not really knowing who you are and what you need to do. About 3 years ago I started using a #Freestyle #Libre Constant Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) and this has changed my entire life! This constantly monitors my blood sugar level and gives me warnings about low and high blood sugar level events and allows me the opportunity to react to correct them. This is particularly invaluable at night when the alarm will wake me up before I become in a state which is hard to recover from. Overall #diabetes has not stopped me from doing anything I really enjoy such as cycling, running, walking, diving, eating nice food or socialising and so I feel very lucky to be able to live a very normal life…! There are some struggles around managing the high and lows during day to day life but generally this is OK and has now become part of my daily routine! The #NHS is an amazing service and it offers such an important quality of life for everyone who is lucky enough to benefit from it. I cannot thank all the staff at my #GP surgery or the #diabetes clinic at the Royal Berkshire Hospital for all of their support and guidance and will forever be grateful for being able to enjoy my fantastic ‘normal’ life!'
