What happens when a company puts empathy at the centre of its design process? At Smallfry, we teamed up with Salts Healthcare to shift their focus toward truly understanding their customers. By collaborating with stoma patients, healthcare professionals, and Salts’ internal team, we helped build a culture of empathetic design that guided the creation of their new line of ostomy bags: Confidence BE®. Through workshops and “meet the designer” interviews, Smallfry uncovered the challenges stoma patients face every day, resulting in a product line that proved user-focused design isn’t just good for people, but good for business. Before we get too far into 2025, we’re taking a moment to look back at a few of the amazing events Smallfry attended in 2024. From networking with regional industry leaders to showcasing our expertise in design and strategy, it’s been a fantastic year for connecting, learning, and growing. Here’s a couple of last year's highlights: Birmingham Tech Week – Attending events across the city, showcasing how design and innovation drive growth in the region's tech sector. The Engineering Design Show (EDS) – Hosting a keynote talk, focusing on Smallfry's work with Haier Europe and what went on behind the scenes to revive the Hoover brand. The Medilink Midlands Innovation Day – Making new connections and sharing insights on medical device design. To kick off the new year, we'll be attending Blue Zone Consortium's networking event at NTU this Friday! Blue Zones are specific areas of the world where people live longer and have lower rates of chronic diseases. As an organisation, the Blue Zone Consortium supports researchers to work across disciplines and industries to develop solutions that help people live longer and healthier lives. The event was unfortunately cancelled last year, but Kelly Myall-Chance is looking forward to attending this time and discovering how Smallfry can help these researchers bring their ideas to life. #MedicalDeviceDesign #IndustrialDesign

The Photon UVC uses a 5 second dose of UVC light to kill corneal infections. When developing the device, Photon Therapeutics were keen to have a design that set out their future ambitions with a visual brand language that conveyed precision, confidence, and cutting-edge technology. To achieve this, the design showcases a sleek, clinical form, complemented by contrasting colours that emphasise soft edges and flowing chamfers, carefully balanced in the hand. Steve May-Russell collaborated with MTC’s Rebecca P. today to run a workshop on cultural considerations in product design at the WMHTIA International Assembly.
