SmartSTEMs is the glue between Tertiary Education, Industry and Schools. We exist to provide equity of opportunity to young people into STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) with particular focus on the gender gap. Our model is SCALABLE and REPLICABLE and DELIVERED through our intertwined initiatives of HUB events and OUTREACH HUB Events are held in tertiary education establishments, by territory, where we convene industry and schools to apply the SmartSTEMs glue and get the good people of Scotland connected and collaborating to best effect. OUTREACH is delivered in Schools & Clubs affording ongoing equitable access to STEM activities locally SmartSTEMs started as a CSR initiative within Seric Systems and it is now set up as a registered charity SmartSTEMs (SC046487) incorporated in April 2017.

Over the past 12 months in collaboration with Glasgow City Council we have delivered a series of groundbreaking digital skills workshops that have made a significant impact on Glasgow's youth. In secondary schools and libraries, we’ve introduced S1-S2 pupils, including those less engaged in traditional education, to vital digital skills through hands-on workshops and interactive learning experiences. The program has used existing resources, like Marty’s and microbits, and enhanced them with new materials to create a dynamic learning environment. In primary schools, we extended this approach, focusing on early digital literacy and inspiring young people to explore digital careers. We were delighted to have successfully delivered the second half of our pilot last week. #STEM #STEMEducation #InspireTheFuture #CollabIsKey

Evidence tells us that if young people have a better understanding of what can be achieved and how, then unsurprisingly, they will go on to achieve more themselves. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to people who have a story to tell or indeed someone willing to tell it. We capture the fantastic stories of those working in STEM to inspire young people. Here is one such story: discover how Andrew Fournet, a prospective fireman, ended up being a communicator supreme in the space sector. Andrew works for CGI, a company that delivers mission-critical space software systems, including satellite navigation, communications and operations, space science, and space-enabled applications. Please like and share our stories to help inspire the next generation!

What a day we had with SP Energy Networks and their Official Community Partner Glasgow Warriors 🤩 We had 120 S1 and S2 pupils from Barrhead, Clevedon, Eastwood, Jordanhill and Notre Dame take part in our event last Wednesday where we took a tour of the grounds, learned about the role of technology and science in sport, and met with ScottishPower, sponsors of the Glasgow Warriors rugby team, who told us about the journey of power and the dangers of electricity. Then we discussed different STEM careers in sport and engineering. We even got to meet a few of the players. Thank you to SP Energy Networks, Glasgow Warriors, and all the pupils and teachers who took part.

How do we inspire the next generation about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM)? Young people attending our events have access to interesting and motivational role models whom they can talk to, as well as a range of hands-on workshops that highlight the diversity of careers in STEM and the skills needed in the industry. They leave our events with a wider understanding of the opportunities available to them and the different routes that can take them there. Here is Derek Lambie a Bareshaft Assembly Leader at Howden, A Chart Industries Company one of our sponsor companies. At the event, Derek shows the students some of the products they make including a 3D model compressor, and talks about the importance of showing young people the breadth of opportunities engineering has to offer.

Last week we were “on the farm” with pupils from Morland Area C of E Primary School at Helm Farm in Cumbria. An information filled afternoon where the children got to learn about our Digital Dairy Chain and SRUC research in to cow behaviour, see robotic milking take place, see an ultrasound of a pregnant cow with the farm vet, sit in a tractor, find out all about animal feed from Massey Feeds and get to meet the new calves up close as they learn all things STEM and careers in dairy! The enthusiasm and fab questions from the group blew us away, we hope they all left feeling inspired and knowledgeable. Thanks to our partner Digital Dairy Chain and everyone at Helm Farm for a brilliant afternoon. #smartstemsonthefarm #careersinstem #thinkdairycareers #CollabIsKey
