Physical Activity for the Prevention and Management of Long-Term Conditions Training Around 1 in 3 men and half of women are not achieving recommended levels of activity for good health, with people with long term conditions twice as likely to be amongst the least active. Physical activity is incorporated across NICE clinical guidance, with evidence suggesting 1 in 4 people would be more active if advised by a GP or nurse. Recent research suggests that 70-80% of GPs do not speak about the benefits of physical activity to patients. This can be associated with knowledge, skills and confidence gaps across HCPs. GP Assistants: Last chance to book! GP Assistants can begin a new qualification on Wednesday 12th February, with a FREE course worth £2,400. ‘Fundamental Skills for General Practice Assistants’ is funded by NHS England. The programme is delivered by Anglia Ruskin University. The 36-week, part-time course doesn’t assume any prior knowledge or experience, just an enthusiasm to learn. GP Assistants will be supported by Anglia Ruskin University’s friendly, experienced tutors. The programme includes approximately three hours of learning per week. Most of the course will take place online, starting with an induction on Wednesday 12th February, followed by regular, live video discussion sessions with tutors and peers. There will also be online activities for GP Assistants to complete in their own time. An in-person training day covers hands-on clinical skills and takes place at Anglia Ruskin University’s Chelmsford campus. Practices will allocate a GP to serve as a ‘mentor’, and sign-off workplace-based tasks. Other colleagues, such as nurses or administrators, may provide non-clinical guidance. Once GP Assistants successfully complete the programme, practices receive a financial contribution of £675, in acknowledgement of the mentoring GPs provide during the learning process. GP Assistants will have learnt to contribute to a more effective working environment, for both staff and patients, via five key areas: · Care · Administration · Clinical · Communication · Managing Health Records For more information and to request your place for February 2025, go to Anglia Ruskin University’s website: https://lnkd.in/dpP7FHEr Send any questions to GPAssistant.writtle@aru.ac.uk

The next generation of GPs who are completing their training with us have been given the chance to gain vital practical experience using the latest virtual reality technology. The group, who are all in their second or third year of GP training, have used the headsets to complete education modules specifically designed for primary care. The technology gave them the chance to follow a patient’s journey before offering them choices about how to examine the patient and what questions to ask. The session was arranged by Dr Lena Farruggio, who is a GP Partner at Debenham and also holds several training roles across the county. She said: “The joint tutorial was a lot of fun and the gave the trainees the chance to take part in a really interactive, innovative and immersive session. “The VR headsets are great as they offer a safe way for the trainees to develop their practical skills and manage what could be tricky consultations or difficult conversations with patients. The trainees thoroughly enjoyed the session, as it provided them with an opportunity to focus deeply, allowing the content to resonate more effectively. “I’d like to thank NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board's GP Training Hub for lending us the headsets, which were supplied by RevolveLabs in Bury St Edmunds. I hope we will be able to widen out the training to other members of the SPC team in the future.”
