Working across our Distribution Hub and Wallsend HQ, Kristina makes an invaluable contribution to several departments. Kristina is responsible for delivering our import and export shipments on time, on budget, and in good condition, adhering to all current legislation and licensing requirements. Discussing her role, she said: “I was drawn to SMD because of its unique product range, its focus on improvement and innovation, and its involvement in the North East community. I am passionate about continuous learning and development, something SMD offers in abundance. Hot off the press 🗞️ Together with Beam, we are taking offshore AI innovation to the next level. Beam has purchased a market-leading SMD Quantum EV and will mount its innovative perception system, SubSLAM, to the vehicle. With the help of the latest Pathfinder™ software, this collaboration will enable autonomous piloting in deeper, harsher waters. Our ROV Sales & Business Development Manager, John McCann, explained: “SubSLAM’S real-time 3D mapping, data collection, and image capture capabilities represent a huge step towards fully autonomous ROV operations. When mounted to a powerful, steady vehicle like the Quantum EV, these capabilities are unlocked in even deeper waters. Simon Adams, Programme Director at Beam, added: “By moving towards autonomous vehicles for inspection and maintenance missions, we cut operational costs and improve overall efficiency. We’re delighted to announce that this year’s SMD Christmas Advent Raffle raised an incredible £2,694.41 for the Tiny Lives Trust! We would like to thank our suppliers for supporting the raffle by supplying some fantastic prizes. The raffle brought festive fun to our workplace while contributing to a cause that makes a real difference by supporting premature and sick newborn babies and their families, at Newcastle's Neonatal Service and across the North East and North Cumbria.  Julie Nicholson, HR Manager, who organized the event, said:  "The generosity and enthusiasm from everyone has been amazing. A North East local, Tracey’s family ties meant she was drawn to our area’s rich engineering heritage from an early age. Tracey explained: “Our region is deeply connected to technology and innovation, with many local people making groundbreaking contributions over the years. “SMD is a shining example that this legacy is very much alive and well. With Christmas right around the corner, we are ending the year with a milestone moment and celebrating the 100th sale of our legacy product, the underwater plough. Developed in 1971 as the original SMD world first, this simultaneous lay and burial plough system embodies the pioneering spirit for which we are best known. Engineered by our founder, Dr Alan Reece, this technology transformed cable burial techniques globally, propelling us to the centre of the telecommunication sector and sparking industry-wide changes that continue to this day. Half a century later, approximately 97 percent of the world’s communications are carried by fibre optic cables, laid using techniques developed with the SMD underwater plough.
