To enable a cleaner, more secure energy future for everyone, we need the network infrastructure to connect and transport more and newer sources of renewable generation. We’re delighted to partner with IoD Northern Ireland to support the delivery of the Infrastructure and Investment Forum. At its first meeting, our Director of Networks and Innovation, Gerard Carlin, delivered a presentation on our plans to transform the power system. Find out more👇
Today the Institute of Directors Northern Ireland held the first in a series of workshops for our Infrastructure and Investment Forum in partnership with Danske Bank UK, KPMG Ireland, SONI - System Operator for Northern Ireland & Gravis Planning. Our expert forum members heard from some of the leading energy experts in Northern Ireland including Gerard Carlin from SONI - System Operator for Northern Ireland, Peter McClenaghan from NIE Networks, Russell Smyth from KPMG Ireland & Steven Agnew from Renewable NI. Our first workshop on energy touched on a number of hugely important topics ranging from grid infrastructure, investor appetite in Northern Ireland, the road to 2050 and many other themes. The infrastructure landscape in Northern Ireland continues to be a massive challenge to our members and society as a whole. Infrastructure serves as the foundation of our nation's economic growth and development, and together with our partners, IoD NI and our expert forum members will come together to explore these challenges and produce a series of tangible recommendations which will unlock further opportunities and break down some of the existing barriers.

SONI have plans to develop a new cluster substation between Limavady and Coleraine known as the Cam Cluster project. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁- 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁? It is a new cluster substation between Limavady and Coleraine to be connected to both the Coolkeeragh – Limavady and the Coleraine - Limavady 110 kV circuits. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? A cluster substation is a Utility Regulator approved method of connecting renewable generation projects to the electricity grid by grouping them together and sharing network infrastructure. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁? The new substation is set to facilitate a number of grid connections in the area. Beyond helping us reach our climate targets, this project will also strengthen the local transmission network, supporting future economic growth in the North and West of Northern Ireland. Once constructed, the Cam Cluster project will help strengthen the local network and ensure it is fit for future use. To find out more about the project, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eiSbubgZ

The Eden-Carnmoney project is a high-capacity transmission system upgrade planned between Eden 110 kV substation near Carrickfergus and Carnmoney 110 kV substation near Newtownabbey. The current infrastructure in this area is now over 80 years old. In order for us to meet the growing demand and enhance security of supply, an upgrade of the existing network is a priority. The benefits of these reinforcement works will enable more cleaner energy on to the grid helping to contribute to NI’s decarbonisation efforts. Importantly, these reinforcement works will enhance security of supply, and support economic growth and investment in the greater Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey areas for years to come.
