Creating change through Sophie's Legacy and her 5 wishes.

About us

Sophie Fairall was a bright and beautiful force of nature. The middle child of a family of five from Stubbington in Hampshire. In August 2020, Sophie had just turned 9. Until this point, she was a healthy and happy girl, who had never spent even one single night in hospital. After suffering for a few months with tummy pain, followed by bleeding, and despite her GP dismissing it as IBS or her first period (she was 9 years old!!) Sophie was taken to A&E in excruciating pain. After being examined by doctors, they discovered that Sophie had a large lump in her abdomen. It would turn out to be an extremely aggressive 12 cm tumour and life would be changed forever. Sophie had Rhabdomyosarcoma, an extremely aggressive soft tissue cancer, which is almost exclusively seen in children. After battling and fighting heroically, with a spirit and determination that you would not believe, Sophie tragically passed away on 18th September 2021 aged 10. For those that knew Sophie, they will know that she wanted to help others and ensure that other children have a better chance of a future and to beat cancer. Despite undergoing the most gruelling treatment for her cancer, including hugely damaging rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Sophie thought of others. She drew-up a list of wishes that she wanted to see granted. Sophie wanted change. This will be Sophie's Legacy. Sophie's Legacy has been set-up to provide a lasting legacy to Sophie and to improve the lives of children and their families with cancer. The primary objectives of Sophie's Legacy are as follows: 1. Support parents/guardians and families whose children have been admitted to hospital. 2. Provide art therapy for children in hospital, as well as in the community. 3. Raise awareness and be an advocate for childhood cancer - incl. signs & symptoms of childhood cancer. 4. Improve the quality of children’s time in hospital through better food standards and the provision of play.

Today was meant to be the Great South Run. We had 75 runners signed up ready to pound the 10 miles to raise money for us. Sadly due to the weather the run was cancelled, I believe it was the first time the event has ever been cancelled (apart from covid year). We had the runners taking part yesterday in the 5k run, kids races and the mascot race. It was great to see children wearing their Sophie's Legacy tshirts and running for us. One little girl ran it even though it was her 6th birthday!! So many of the 75 runners have decided to run the 10 miles this weekend regardless of the weather. They had raised the money and didn't want to let anyone down. That's dedication for you. The support we have is just unbelievable, we have the best fans. Even one dad ran his 10 miles from Southampton hospital as his child has been in intensive care this week. We have helped the family so many times from their frequent admissions and he was determined to raise the money to give back. If you have any photos or videos from your run this weekend we would love to see them. When we checked this week the total raised it was just over £15,000 and likely to increase this weekend. This money will make such a difference to families in hospital, ensuring they have access to all the essentials when in hospital. It's only when you end up in hospital do you realise the impact it makes to your stay. #sophieslegacy #greatsouthrun

We are so proud to introduce our Sophie's Legacy QA Family Support Workers; Katie-Lily & Gemma. Katie-Lily and Gemma will be on the children's ward Sunday - Friday and they will be offering parents emotional and practical support. They are already making a huge difference. The wonderful QA hospital nurses have started to call on them when they know a parent or carer needs support. The support varies hugely but can be anything from making a referral for ongoing support to our referral team, getting clothing/toiletries/parent packs from our storage in the hospital, showing where the parents room is and what is in there, sitting with the child so their parent can use the bathroom or make a call, taking parents for a Costa if they are overwhelmed and lending a listening ear or shoulder to cry on. Having a presence on the children's ward whose sole focus is to support parents is something we have wanted to do since we set up the charity. The difference the support they can offer to families going through the toughest times is absolutely invaluable. These roles are funded by Sophie's Legacy with thanks to the donations and fundraisers of our wonderful supporters. Going forward we would love to have Family Support Workers in Southampton Hospital children's wards too. Our hope is to extend Katie-Lily and Gemma's roles beyond their initial one year contract and are hoping to secure grant funding to do so. To help us with this, we need as much feedback as possible to support the applications. If you have been supported by Katie-Lily or Gemma please pop a comment below or email hannah@sophieslegacy.org.uk 🙏🏻💛 #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #seethegoodineveryday #QAhospital #familysupportworker

Sophie's 10k is back!! The first 10k was in December 2020 and Sophie absolutely loved it, she handed out medals which she had designed. In the last two weeks of Sophie's life she sat in her hospital bed and designed three medals for us to use for future 10k events. We had the Easter 10k in 2022 and the Halloween medal last year. This years medal is the final medal that Sophie designed and is a special Christmas medal 🎄💛 Date - Saturday 7th December Time - 10am until 4pm Place - Crofton Community Centre in the Sports hall. Price - £15 per medal How to order - go to https://lnkd.in/dabGm8Nw The main idea behind the 10k is to get people moving. You can run, walk, cycle, swim, scooter, skip etc. your 10k your way. You can break it up by doing 1k a day for 10 days or all in one go. We will have a suggested route which will include Sophie's bench but you can do this anywhere. There will be lots of fun and festivities on the day with some special Christmas guests. We will be opening this up around the country for virtual participants. Medals will be posted out closer to the time. If you are ordering the medals and want to collect on the day please choose office pick up. If you would like them posted to you, please choose the postal option. Please share this with your friends, family, colleagues and let's raise lots of money for Sophie's Legacy whilst getting fit and spending time together. #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #seethegoodineveryday #10kchallenge #10k #runningcommunity #running

I visited 9 hospitals in the North of the country which Sophie's Legacy are funding. These hospitals have all committed to continuing to feed parents beyond when the pilot project finishes. Incredible feedback already from the families in hospital. These are just some of the 15 hospitals we're funding to ensure parents are fed. As a charity we work hard on a national level to change things around the country to ensure parents are fed. It's about time parents are valued for what they do with caring for their child in hospital by making sure they have access to food. #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #feedtheparents

PLEASE WATCH THIS!! We need our army of Sophie's Legacy supporters to help us put pressure on the new government to 'un-pause' the Childhood Cancer Taskforce. We are feeling a bit broken and deflated by the shocking news that they are pausing the taskforce BUT we won't stop FIGHTING!! If we don't fight and advocate for our children, who will? Our children deserve so much more than this. Please go to our website to get the template letter https://lnkd.in/ede6TiFb #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth

Charlie is 8 years old and has spent some time in hospital. He knows how important it is for families to have support during their stay and has become a huge champion of Sophie's Legacy. Charlie wanted to raise money for Sophie's Legacy and set himself the incredible task of climbing not one, but THREE mountains 🏔️ Snowden and Ben Nevis have been completed 💪🏻 And Charlie will climb Scafell Pike on the 7th September. A young boy taking on such a mammoth challenge is awe-inspiring in itself but the strength and determination Charlie has shown over the last few months is beyond inspiring... Charlies dad sadly passed away in February and even through his grief, Charlie has not given up on his goal and has continued to push himself to complete his challenge. The courage and resilience he has shown has blown us away. We are so proud of Charlie. He is our hero 💛💪🏻 Please check out his Just Giving page and support him.
