    The best hospitality experiences come from teams that feel supported, valued, and given the chance to grow. When businesses focus on their people, it’s not just the employees who benefit, it makes the industry better for everyone. Learning, progressing, and building a career in this space is tough, but it’s what makes hospitality so rewarding. Working with Agnes at Hospitaliti, myself & SPLINTER UNIT FILMS have been capturing stories from some of the industry’s most inspiring voices, hearing their take on what’s next for hospitality. First up is The Blue Stoops, a pub with an incredible story. Founded by Jamie Allsopp, whose family once brewed a beer so legendary it was almost nationalised, it’s now the first pub to serve that beer on tap. We sat down (or walked-around) with Paul McKenna from Red Branch Hospitality who shared powerful insights on creating workplaces where people can thrive. It’s been amazing to see how these leaders are shaping the future of hospitality through their passion and dedication to their teams.   • Working with Berkshire Trout, our aim was to raise awareness of the food side of their business while sharing the rich history of their farm. We produced a series of films showcasing various aspects of their process, from sustainable farming to river and market, highlighting their beautiful trout products.   • The SUF team worked hard to bring the farm to life through video postcards and foley sound captured on-site at Berkshire Trout.

    "Make Trout Farming Look Sexy" That was our brief from the lovely owners at Berkshire Trout, who do an amazing job of sustainable trout farming and river restocking across the South of the UK. They also sell some wonderful products online and at local markets in the South. I'm sure you've seen them if you love a good food market! We decided to capture the farm with quick, video postcard-style shots, focusing on the nature, the people, and the landscapes at the farm. This film was also part of a longer production created to showcase the story of Berkshire Trout, its history, processes, and sustainable practices.     A key filmmaking principle is "Show, don’t tell." Every great film shows you what you need to know and allows you, as the intelligent viewer, to come to your own realisations about the plot. This is far more rewarding as an audience than being spoon-fed what to think and do. Assume your audience is smart and capable of making their own choices - give them the information visually, and let them come to their own conclusions. In brand storytelling, crafting intelligent stories that inform without relying on dumbed-down captions won’t just guide your audience - it will engage them on a deeper level.     With every project I take on, I ask myself one key question: "How will this film make the audience feel?" I came into film through my father, who handed me a camcorder and tasked me with capturing our family holidays. I’d cut them together with music and titles, and then watch as my mother cried, reminiscing over happy memories. It was in those moments I learned that films had the power to make people feel. When I think back to the stories that stuck with me, I vividly remember the ones that made me cry, laugh uncontrollably, or feel a deep, simmering anger. I picked up a book back at Film School called "Actions: The Actors' Thesaurus," a book filled with emotive words to help performers find the right feeling in their scenes. As a director, it’s essential to be able to communicate emotion to actors, and in much the same way, it’s crucial for your messaging to convey the feeling you want your audience to experience. A story that makes people feel strongly, deep within themselves is a story that sticks with them, and that's where the real impact lies. So next time you’re working on a video for your product or service’s, ask yourself: What emotions will this create? And how will those emotions encourage action?

    What really is brand storytelling? First, we have to look at what it's not: → It's not a sales pitch: nobody wants to be sold too by a salesman, we want to feel like we've made the decision ourselves on whether we want to buy a product or service. → It's not necessarily about the brand itself: when we buy a watch we do it for how it makes us feel, we're buying in to a lifestyle, a feeling, a want for something that was once out of reach. → It's not just "content": Generic flat, churn and burn content is not memorable in the long-term, you want to evoke an emotion, a genuine feeling for a company's products to build trust and rapport. So with this in mind, what is brand storytelling? It's a way to build a cohesive narrative that goes beyond the brand, it communicates the brand's values, mission and purpose in a way that resonates with the customer. → Emotional Connection: You should be able to relate to the stories on a personal level, doing this through humour, nostalgia, inspiration, or shared values. → Customer-centric: The customer is at the heart of every story, showing how they use the product to their benefit to overcome something to achieve greatness. → Humanisation of a Brand: We don't just want to watch red paint dry. We want to see the young woman painting her first flat in London, transforming her space with a vibrant shade of red. We want to watch as the room takes shape, reflecting her bold interior design choices, and feel the ups and downs of her life as it unfolds within those walls. That bucket of red paint isn’t just paint, it’s the beginning of her story. As a brand, creating that emotional connection with your customers is what turns a simple product into something much more meaningful.
