SPS Technology's Sandwich Plate System (SPS) is a transformational technology. This proprietary structural material comprises two metal plates bonded by an elastomer core, ElastocoreⓉ, manufactured by our partner BASF. SPS delivers a high strength-to-weight ratio and is an excellent alternative to reinforced concrete and stiffened steel. It has been used extensively in the civil, maritime, and offshore markets for nearly three decades. In the maritime and offshore markets, SPS is approved by all major Classification Societies. It has been used to reinstate and strengthen vessels, assets and structures where corrosion occurs. It is nonintrusive and can use the existing corroded structure as one side of the newly installed composite. The Class-approved SPS COLD WORK Solution—a no-hot-work repair method—has been available since 2003. Civil engineers and architects have accepted and used SPS in new-build and restoration projects. SPS Technology uses modern methods of construction to fabricate SPS components offsite, ready to install immediately. SPS Technology delivers the SPS Stadia + Arenas System: stands and terraces, aisle steps, speed stairs, walls and platforms made from SPS and installed by metalwork subcontractors. We’re proud to reflect on a notable project we completed back in 2019 for our valued client, Condor Limited, on their Ro-Ro vessel, Commodore Clipper. Project Overview: Location: A&P Falmouth, United Kingdom Scope: Application of SPS on the Main Deck Total Area: Approximately 74sqm Objective: Reinstating deck plating affected by localised corrosion The #SPS process involved preparing the existing deck surface, welding solid perimeter bars to the existing deck, then welding the thin SPS top plate to the bars to create a hollow cavity. This cavity was then injected with an elastomer, which solidifies in 15 mins. The deck is back in operation 12 hours after the last injection. The project was approved by DNV. The final result? A robust, reinforced deck ready for continued service! Thanks to our dedicated team and collaborative partners, this project was completed successfully, reinforcing our commitment to quality and precision in every job. Back in 2022, we had the privilege of working with Dutra Group on the Stuyvesant. Our team successfully carried out critical repairs on the Poop Deck, Boat Deck, Bulkhead, and Hopper Well, addressing common wear and corrosion issue. To minimise disruption to onboard systems, we implemented a ‘low-heat-input’ SPS solution, offering key benefits: - Minimal disruption to sub-deck services and insulation - Perimeter bars fixed with engineered structural adhesive in select areas, preventing heat transfer to the original plating - Down-hand welding and simplified steel working techniques for fast and safe execution This innovative approach reduced repair time and allowed us to retain the original deck plating, providing a faster, more efficient alternative to traditional ‘crop-and-renew’ repairs. The project was successfully approved by ABS and the US Coast Guard – and now, we’re thrilled to be heading back for more SPS work on the same vessel! Thank you to the facilities team at London Stadium for facilitating a recent client visit for our CEO David Glover… nothing compares to an in-person visit to see the SPS Stadia + Arenas System in action!🙌 Following the London 2012 Olympics, the Olympic stadium was transformed by architects Populous into the world-class London Stadium, complete with a new mid-tier hospitality suite and terraces. It’s now a multi-use venue and home to premier league club West Ham United. Only SPS stadia decking was both durable and versatile enough to meet the brief. In 2022, our prefabricated terrace decking system was chosen to re-profile the existing concrete bowl at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum. The regeneration project, completed by architects HOK, has resulted in upgraded sightlines and an improved 21st-century spectator and athlete experience whilst saving considerable time and money!
