It’s fantastic to see the government has committed to invest in our schools. £1.4bn for the school rebuilding programme. £2.1bn to improve the condition of the school estate. Creating meaningful outdoor spaces for the country’s children is a must have for all school spaces, helping to educate the next generation to value the natural world. SR-LA have been crafting the landscape designs on a number of education projects recently, something we have very much enjoyed doing. It was early spring tree identification time earlier today as we visited a completed site for a client. An interesting way to introduce #biophilicdesign. Far better to spend some time in an outdoor space surrounded by plants rather than the driver's seat whilst waiting for the car to charge!

Where are the trees? It’s great to see development in the city and at least some tree planting but there NEEDS to be more tree planting incorporated in these city centre developments. There is always a way to get trees in with adequate rooting zone, albeit in the situations such as paradise this usually requires much greater technical consideration and coordination. The cost of increasing the number of trees in these city centre developments is relatively small in the context of the overall development costs. Increased tree planting in the city will have countless benefits such as; help to move towards the councils tree policy target of 25% tree cover, help reduce urban heat island, improve health and wellbeing of people, provide at least some habitat for wildlife, provide biophillia to connect people to nature and also assist with achieving Birminghams Urban Forest Masterplan. Hope to see more trees going forward in Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton, Landscape Architects need to be engaged early on to ensure coordination happens early on to ensure a cost effective, sustainable and integrated approach to tree planting along with all other external elements.
