We care for patients and families who are affected by life-shortening conditions across Chorley Preston and South Ribble

About us

St Catherine’s Hospice is a well-renowned local charity working to support people in Central Lancashire who are affected by life-shortening conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure. Working at the hospice, in the community and at home, we’re here to help people enjoy the best possible quality of life and, when the time comes, to have comfort and dignity in death. It costs around £5.6m to run our services each year for a population of approximately 380,000 people across Chorley, Preston and South Ribble. Of this, a huge £3.7m must be raised through charitable giving. Money is raised in a variety of ways including fundraising events, donations, the St Catherine’s Hospice lottery, our 18 shops and legacy gifts. We also work hard to raise awareness of St Catherine’s as a place of positivity and peace, breaking down barriers which could prevent people from accessing our care.

  • Breaking down barriers: Changing perceptions of hospice care "I didn't actually want to come in," shares Linda, one of our patients. Like many, Linda was apprehensive about hospice care, worried about being in a clinical environment and away from family. But her experience tells a different story: "I arrived at St Catherine's after being in hospital for six weeks and instantly felt a huge relief. The staff were very welcoming, kind and in tune with my needs." What Linda found wasn't the clinical environment she feared, but a place of tranquillity and support: • Rooms overlooking peaceful gardens • Freedom to personalise her space with items from home • Flexible visiting hours for family • Complementary therapies to help her feel more like herself • A supportive environment where both patients and families find comfort "It's not like a hospital at all," Linda explains. "My family can visit whenever they like - my daughter comes every morning with the newspaper, my husband visits in the afternoon, and other family members come in the evening after work. Everyone at the hospice has made them feel welcome." Through the generosity of our supporters and donors, we're able to provide not just essential care, but also the additional services that make such a difference to our patients' wellbeing. "I would not hesitate to recommend St Catherine's to someone who needed their help. I don't think I'd find this peace anywhere else." Stories like Linda's help us break down the barriers and misconceptions about hospice care. If you or someone you know is anxious about receiving hospice care, we're here to have an open conversation about what to expect. #HospiceCare #HealthcareExperience #PatientCare #CompassionateCare #StCatherines
