Suicide First Aid (SFA) UK ® reposted this
Out of a UK workforce of 33 million people, 40,000 employees consider suicide every day. Suicide is complex and tragic but is one of the most preventable deaths in society. This year's theme for #WorldMentalHealthDay placed the focus on prioritising mental health in the workplace, and Suicide First Aid (SFA) training is one of the most important ways your organisation can create a workplace culture that prioritises mental health and wellbeing. Investing in SFA training can: ✨ help your employees to recognise the early signs of suicidal behaviour, intervene effectively and offer support and assistance to those in crisis ✨ empower your employees with the skills and confidence they need to make a difference and potentially save lives ✨ create a more supportive and positive work environment, increased employee engagement and retention and improved productivity ✨ help your organisation to comply with health and safety regulations and demonstrate its commitment to social responsibility, playing a vital role in creating a healthier, happier and more resilient society 💫 Our partner, Steve Carr, is delivering his next Suicide First Aid (SFA) UK ® course on November 16th - book your place today at https://lnkd.in/e5Q95D9R or email steve@mindcanyon.co.uk for more details. Is Now the Time to Stop Making Jokes About Men—And make it About Saving Lives We’ve all heard (or maybe even made) jokes about men being emotionally unavailable or laughing off their feelings. Phrases like “Man up” or “Boys don’t cry” have been so normalised that we rarely think about the impact they have on men’s mental health. These jokes may seem harmless, but they add to a culture of silence, shame, and emotional suppression. It Starts in Childhood From a young age, boys are often conditioned to hide their emotions. When boys fall over, they’re more likely to be told not to cry, while girls in the same situation are comforted with hugs and affection. This early messaging teaches boys that expressing pain or vulnerability is unacceptable—a lesson that carries into adulthood. The Reality Is Serious Men are far less likely to seek help for mental health struggles and are at a much higher risk of dying by suicide. Why? Because society pressures men to be “tough” and stoic, making it difficult for them to open up. Many feel they have to hide their struggles, thinking vulnerability is a weakness rather than a natural part of being human. Openness Can Save Lives Imagine a world where men are supported, not ridiculed, for showing emotion. Where expressing pain is met with empathy, not judgment. Encouraging this kind of openness isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Talking about emotions breaks down isolation and can truly save lives by helping men access support. How We Can All Make a Difference Watch Your Language: Stop making jokes about men’s emotions and don’t reinforce harmful stereotypes. Normalise the Conversation: Talk openly about mental health and show that sharing feelings is important, no matter your gender. Be Supportive: If a man opens up, listen without judgment. Show empathy, and let him know it’s okay to feel and to seek help. Encouraging men to be open about their feelings is more than just being nice—it’s crucial for saving lives. Let’s shift the conversation and make sure every man knows his emotions are valid and important. After all, who taught our men to hide emotion? It’s time we unlearn that lesson together. #MentalHealth #Men’sHealth #SuicidePrevention #BreakTheStigma #EmotionalWellbeing #SupportMen #EndTheSilence #TalkAboutIt #BeKind #ChangingTheNarrative
