A research institute at the University of Plymouth advancing research, knowledge and innovation for a sustainable earth.
About us
The sustainability of life rests on the precarious balance between the interconnected health of our Earth, oceans and atmosphere. In turn, the stewardship of this complex system depends on the interconnected efforts of all those who rely on it. The Sustainable Earth Institute (SEI) connects the university’s world leading research and expertise with the wider world. We bring together researchers from natural and social sciences, engineering, arts, humanities, health and business, to take an interdisciplinary, systems-thinking approach to help tackle sustainability challenges. Our research responds to the call of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to both global efforts, and the needs identified locally where our capabilities can make a difference. We engage with all sectors – private, public and third – to work together on innovative solutions for a more sustainable Earth. We need to protect our dynamic and unique world – after all, good planets are hard to find.

Polling evidence in the UK shows there is very strong concern about climate change and sustainability across all population demographics, however, in research undertaken by Professor Alison Anderson, only 1 in 4 young people felt ‘very informed on climate change’. Next week Professor Alison Anderson, will be at #EvidenceWeek in Parliament with Sense about Science to present research evidence on ‘A Climate Problem-Solving Generation’, to help parliamentarians better understand the needs of young people and improve government policy. MPs, peers and parliamentary staff can book their quickfire policy briefing and find more information about the whole week with Alison here: https://lnkd.in/dQF3su9M

It was a great pleasure working alongside my #UNESCO IHP colleague Dr Omogbemi Yaya and his team from the Nigerian National Water Resources Institute, and Sustainable Earth Institute colleagues Munira Raji, PhD., Claire Kelly, lise hunter, Mona Nasseri and Kevin D Jones at our joint #climatesmartagriculture network development workshop in Abuja, Nigeria. Sponsored by Innovate UK and University of Plymouth, we worked with a wide range of academic and non academic partners to identify challenges and technology gaps, explore relevant research and practice, and identify opportunities for future interdisciplinary, cross sector working to help scale out CSA technologies and practice ... supporting sustainable soil and water management at the river basin scale. #internationalscientificpartnership

Yesterday, the delegation from University of Plymouth visited the Cross River National Park in Calabar, the largest rainforest area in Nigeria spanning approximately 4,000 km² of diverse habitats, primary moist tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, coastal zones and a hotspot for rare and endangered species. It shares a border with Korup National Park in Cameroon. During the tour, we observed the rich biodiversity in the National Park and also saw the negative effects of deforestation, illegal logging, and farming on the ecosystem, particularly their impact on climate change. The rangers emphasised the importance of sustainable rainforest management practices and highlighted some of the challenges of finding a balance between conservation of the rainforest and the needs of local communities around food security, job opportunities, and green entrepreneurship to support sustainable livelihoods.
