The SWR Bottle Weight Accord continues to build irresistible momentum, welcoming three new signatories who are taking bold steps toward more sustainable wine packaging. 🇦🇺 Accolade Wines, one of Australia’s leading wineries 🇳🇱 Albert Heijn, the Netherlands’ largest supermarket group 🇿🇦 Botanica Wines, a boutique, award-winning winery from South Africa These new members join a growing global effort that spans the entire wine value chain. At the one-year mark, the Accord represented over 1.5 billion bottles of wine annually, saving an average of 96g of CO2 per bottle. To commemorate the Accord’s first anniversary, we’re proud to release our ‘Lightweight(ing) Report,’ highlighting tangible results and key learnings from the past year. We’re proud to share some exciting news from SWR's Research Director, Dr Peter Stanbury, who has recently been appointed to the UK Government’s National Advisory Panel to feed into the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine on behalf of the UK. Peter will be working closely with the Wine Team at DEFRA, providing input on OIV draft resolutions, particularly on sustainability in wine. He also serves as a member of the OIV’s Sustainable Development and Climate Change Expert Group. With the OIV’s 2029 strategy centred on “resilient and sustainable viticulture,” we’re thrilled to see Peter contributing his expertise and championing SWR’s evidence-based approach in these critical global discussions.

I have just been appointed the UK Government’s National Advisory Panel to feed into the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine on behalf of the UK. I will be working with the excellent Wine Team at the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. providing input to them on OIV draft resolutions, particularly in relation to sustainability in wine. I am also a member of the OIV’s Sustainable Development and Climate Change Expert Group. The International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) is the globally recognised body in the field of winemaking and wine analysis. Sort of like a UN for the wine sector. It was established by an international agreement between member states to inform, assist, standardise, and support the vini-viticultural sector. The OIV currently has 50 Member States – countries which represent 87% of global wine production and 71% of global wine consumption. Last year OIV launched its strategy to 2029, central to which is a focus on “resilient and sustainable viticulture”, so it is an exciting time to be involved.

The Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) is thrilled to announce the release of our Standards Benchmarking Pilot Report. This marks a major milestone in bringing clarity and comparability to the world of wine sustainability standards. With over 40 standards globally, navigating the complexities of sustainability can be daunting. Our report evaluates seven standards across key regions such as California, South Africa, New Zealand, Italy, Australia, and Germany, uncovering best practices and areas for growth. This is the first step in a larger effort to benchmark all global wine sustainability standards, with comprehensive results to follow in 2025. This work was made possible through the support of The Wine Society, Systembolaget AB, Pernod Ricard Winemakers, Alko Oy, and Equalitas.
