  • To us, location is more than just an address. Our #London headquarters are at 20 St Dunstan’s Hill, between Tower Hill and Monument, not only overlooking the Thames but right opposite the St Dunstan in the East Church Garden. This is a public garden which is often referred to as the most beautiful garden in the City of London. Bank, Monument, London Bridge and Cannon Street stations are all within walking distance making our offices easy for our staff and clients to access. Many of our staff walk or cycle to work. Thanks to our central location in the City of London, we are in close proximity to Lloyd's and the marine insurance market place, likewise the London based P&I Clubs, and within easy reach of London’s airports. Is your office nearby or have you visited the area? Let us know in the comments. Tatham & Co

  • 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩! – 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞 Last week our Chris Farmer and Paul Haworth hosted a Bridge Simulator Day at the BMT Facility in Fareham. The event brought together maritime London claims handlers from West, London P&I Club and NorthStandard for an engaging day of hands-on learning and practical scenarios under the guidance of our two experienced Master Mariners. Prior to qualifying as a solicitor in 2006, Chris spent 17 years at sea on a variety of vessels including LPG, product and crude oil carriers, container ships and cross-channel ferries. Paul spent 16 years at sea sailing on LPG carriers, cruise ships and DP Classed dive support vessels. Highlights of the day included: - A comprehensive introduction to the cutting-edge bridge simulator equipment, offering insights into navigating complex maritime environments. - Immersive practical sessions, featuring scenarios like container ship and tugmaster operations, ensuring attendees gained real-world experience in ship handling. - A relaxed evening of networking over drinks and dinner after a busy day. At BMT’s multi-platform, next generation navigation simulator suite, participants had access to DnV Class A Full Mission Bridges and DnV Class A dedicated 360 tug simulators, which contain many of the features of modern integrated bridge systems, with 360 degree immersive 3D visuals, the same environment in which marine pilot training takes place. We also had a senior practising Solent pilot in attendance to provide some useful insight into the practical issues that the Master and Pilot face when berthing large modern vessels alongside in sometimes challenging conditions.  While the industry is increasingly affected by over-legalisation, shipping remains inherently technical, requiring hands-on expertise and real-world problem-solving. We are uniquely positioned to understand both sides and were happy to share our expertise to support a practical, solutions-oriented approach. For any queries or to enquire about training for your claims handlers, please contact your usual contact at Tatham & Co. #tathamlaw #maritime #shipping

  • We were delighted to host our Greek clients and friends at our #Piraeus Autumn Party earlier this week in the beautiful surroundings of Istioploikos Omilos Restaurant. Again this year we have held this event, and it has now become an autumn tradition. Now with a permanent Tatham & Co office in Piraeus set up by Ioanna Vitta, we are proud to continue to strengthen existing, and grow new partnerships in Greece.    It was a pleasure to reconnect, catch up, and enjoy the wonderful views of Piraeus together – we hope you enjoyed the evening as much as we did.   Thank you to everyone who joined us. • Like our friends and colleagues around the world, we at Tatham & Co are delighted to celebrate #WorldMaritimeDay. The work we do to help and protect seafarers is an important and vital part of what we do. Their safety and security is paramount, every day. We join with everyone who values what our seafarers do for all of us. Never has the World Maritime Day theme of “Navigating the future: safety first” seemed more apt than in today’s fast-changing and ever more challenging environment.

  • Lloyd’s Open Form (#LOF) 2024 has now been published by Lloyd's of London. This is its 14th edition since it was first launched in 1908, replacing the 2020 Form. Ultimately the hope of Lloyd’s and other stakeholders behind these changes is that there will be an increased uptake of LOF, which has seen its numbers decline in recent years, on the basis that the industry needs salvors and must find an equitable solution to their engagement and remuneration. Tatham & Co Partner Simon Tatham has written an update on the changes that will impact #salvors, #insurers and #shipowners (link below in the comments). For further information reach out to Simon on LinkedIn.

“At 47 pages, this is a surprisingly long judgment given the frequency of ships dragging their anchor around Chattogram.” Legal Director Paul Haworth comments on the first Admiralty Court judgment of 2024, Denver Maritime Ltd v Belpareil AS [2024] EWHC 362 (Admlty): https://lnkd.in/eNzj8dG8   The case involved a #collision between the vessels “Kiran Australia” and “Belpareil”. The judgement serves as a useful reminder that: - gathering evidence and preparing witness statements in the immediate aftermath of a casualty helps protect a party’s position at trial; and - witness statements need to comply with Civil Procedure Rules practice direction PD57AC.   Paul is a Master Mariner with command experience. He spent 16 years at sea on a variety of vessels including LPG carriers, cruise ships and DP classed vessels in the offshore sector.   #Tathamlaw #disputeresolution #shipping #maritime

  • Legal Director Joanne Moody and Cathal M., Graduate Solicitor Apprentice, spent a couple of days out and about in Northern Ireland, seeing clients and catching up with professional colleagues.   A highlight was their attendance at the formal launch of the Northern Ireland Maritime & Offshore Network (NIMO).   Joanne was introduced to HRH The Princess Royal and had the opportunity to speak to her about the work we do in support of seafarers, given our extensive experience handling maritime #hostage situations, #kidnappings and #casualties.   Building on this great start for this growing regional cluster, we look forward to attending further events as members and supporters of NIMO in early June, when the @Maritime UK Awards 2024 #MUKA24 take place in Belfast.
